TSO vs Vidahost (or Microsoft vs Linux servers)?

Right I'm on the verge of taking the plunge and after digesting advice here and from elsewhere have decided to go with either Vidahost or TSOhost for my hosting needs.

Before doing so though I have been cautioned by my 'web developer' mate to be sure of the following support from the webhost

These protocols/packages need to be supported if the site he has been working on is to work:

ASP.NET 3.5 or (4.0 pref) - Crucial
SQLserver Express - Required
SMT Relay Server - Desirable

So it seems really, a Windows server rather than Linux is prerequiste rather than just desirable

Whereas TSO seem to imply MS hosting options are there from the outset, Vidahost make a point of saying over 98.5% of their servers are Linux. TSO also appear to be more upfront about just what their windows web hosting service offers.

Does anyone have experience of MS Web Hosting with either of these two companies? - must admit I was leaning towards Vidahost up until now; I'm simply unsure regarding their MS options, if they really exist at all - TSO seems stronger on that front, but I may be wrong!

Any direction helpful at this stage - have to make this decision in the next few hours!

It's tempting to post one the other way in the duplicate thread but we wouldn't want to fill up (non-GD) areas with rubbish would we :D

Ha no indeed :D, it would confuse the hell out of me anyway - if that's further possible!

Beansprout, most curious about you position on this. Intuition would suggest you back the opposition - is Vidahost not really up to hosting the above? I tried PM'ing you but it appears the OCUK forum has this option closed, and so emailed you via trust.

Cheers

i have windows servers with TSO host, no problems so far.

they do seem to be more linux orientated, but then most hosts are. Linux is free and geeks love it. :)

Well, vidahost and tsohost for me in the end. Used Vidahost's DNS service to register my domain and Tsohost to host, as their clustered platform approach allows for simultaneous linux and windows hosting.

Best of both worlds. Result! :D

you can register domains with TSO and use their DNS services.

I heard somewhere (actually time and again) it was unwise to share DNS/domain reg with your webhost and best to split these services across different providers. Sure, such a cautious approach is utterly superfluous in this case though!

FWIW, Vidahost are mostly a TSO reseller, their servers are on TSO's ipblocks.

I'm with vidahost, the support is top notch. They are cheaper than TSO for smaller sites, but their pricing doesnt scale well though in comparison to TSO, which must stem from the fact they use TSO for provision.

In the OP he mentions vida are mostly linux only, that's simply because they resell TSO's linux boxes and cloud hosting.

Also worth a note: Vida list prices ex VAT only, which really annoys me recently. TSO show prices with VAT inclusive only. Something I really like. Seems a bit more honest.

certainly they can be treated differently. A Host can run their web servers well and not their name servers, certainly, if uptime is ultra important, then you might invest in provision from a DNS specialist. For the most part though, a decent host is good at both.

Vidahost are not a reseller of Tsohost. They run their own servers, their own network, their own firewalls. They simply use bandwidth and network services provided by the same parent company hence the netname.

I think you'll find that like Adz mentions above Vidahost and TSOHost are nothing to do with one another. They might buy their servers and networks from the same providers - that's all.

Welcome to the forum, careful cos you'll never leave :)

I've created a catch 22, if I recommended my own company I'd be banned for breaking the rules so I went with the middle ground which was a little impartial poke but then of course everyone wonders why I posted what I did - the answer is simple, I got my MOH badge by being useful in this section so like to stick to that :)
