Tubs

I like doing things myself so I know they are done right and I'm a tight ass.

Labour costs are stupid, I think the local mech charges 60-75 an hour which is fairly standard. That buys a lot of tools!

It's a lot easier to throw my bike in the stand at home and give it a quick gear tune than take it to work, take it down the shop, wait a few days and hope it's done right.

First coat done!

Watched a GCN video with a Cannondale Garmin interview, they put 4-6 layers of cement on a fresh rim!

Also what I found interesting, they use a file to remove the clear rubber which Vittoria among other use on the back of the tub on top of the tape. I read that removing it wasn't necessary, and Vittoria don't make any mention of removing it. Doing so if you are heavy handed could damage the tyre.

I did remove it on my first set, but that was after gluing them with ****** Conti glue so I used a rounded file to get rid of the glue and the rubber. The end result was a tyre stuck so well I couldn't get it off the rim...

I've bought some 'goof off' to try and remove tubular glue.

It seems a bit more effective than acetone used with extra fine wire wool at removing old glue. Just a rag doesn't work at all with either.

Not sure what is worse, putting the glue on or removing it!

Following up, removing glue is a pain.

I've put an old clincher around the outside of the wheel, then poured a small amount of goof off into the well of the tyre. Leave it stood up for 10 mins and it softens the glue right up on maybe 10% of the wheel at a time making it easy to remove.

Can see my decals being ruined after this from small amounts of it running off, but I can always remove them, white on black are a bit shouty anyway.

Heat gun worked wonders for the stuff I took off when I replaced the tub on my disc. Will probably be doing it again over the winter! Think. A year out of a tub on tts is enough.

Ah, the worst bit of Tubulars. Removing the old glue.

The old tyre came off patchy so I decided to remove all the glue & start again rather than have high spots and risk a tyre rolling.

Being careful to avoid removing the decals, goof off on a rag and working it round. 20 minutes and I've done a tenth of the rim.....

Berger you seem to have the worst experience of this. Altho never completely removing glue before I've removed chunks and it's not been. That bad. Get a heat gun it'll work wonders!

Will borrow one from a guy at work, should soften the glue but didn't want to go too extreme.

Fine wire wool works well with goof off on it but it tends to end up with goof off running down the side of the wheel and taking the stickers off. Not a problem if you have Zipps as they are clearcoated.
