Want to buy a tumble dryer but not sure what to go for.

Heat pumps are efficient, but expensive. And have read mixed reviews on them - some say they're the best thing ever, others say they're a waste of time.

Vented are cheap and simple, but require a vent. (I've only ever used a vented).

So thought about the condenser option. Are these on par with a vented machine, and just collect the water instead? Or are they worse with drying times etc?

Your thoughts are welcomed!

From what I understand, condensers get hotter than heat pumps, so if you want laundry to come out warm because it's what you're used to, it might be preferable to a heat pump. But heat pumps are more efficient and help clothes last longer.

Why anyone would buy vented, I'm not entirely sure. You're making a load of heat and then literally blowing it outside. I guess if you've got money to burn, or you spend more on cooling your house than heating it, that might make sense.

If you like to hold on to your money, heat pump dryers are the way forward.

Their only real downside is they take a bit longer for loads to run through but we have not found it to be an issue. The washer always runs on the long eco cycle anyway so the drying is done before the second load anyway.

The advantages of the heat pump drier are they cost way less to run and you can put almost anything in them because they don't get hot. You don't need to worry about transfers or clothing made from 'lycra' like materials etc - just shove them all in.

The only advantage of a condenser is they are faster but they burn through energy like crazy compared to a heat pump. Vented driers burn even more energy than a condenser and then blow it all outside, that is a hard no from me.

We got a heat pump one when we re-did the kitchen/utility. It does take longer than the old one but we use it to dry everything now

What Make/Model do you have?
Samsung DV90TA040AX

I wish I had spent the extra £80 (although this was already way over my budget lol) for the one with WiFi. That way you can schedule finish times and do the drying in your cheap energy rate for further cost savings. It has a delay timer but its the old fashion style.

Thanks for the input, I'll get looking at heat pumps then.

Anything I need to look out for in particular? Or just grab whichever is most suitable in terms of load size?

Honestly I think the WiFi is a bit of a hassle.

It just adds another step to the process. Where you’d normally put the load in the dryer, set a delay for (finish time-time taken) and start, you now gotta grab your phone, open the app and do it in there

And that’s assuming it works properly.

Yeah fair comment - I have the Neff dishwasher with WiFi and moved away from app scheduling to just setting the +3hrs timer before bed. This only ever gets used over night in the cheap period; never during the day.

With the tumble however I don't want dank clothes sitting for too long etc. So the upgraded WiFi model you can either do via App, or you can use the upgraded screens they come with (my washer has the upgraded screen). Delay End makes it tricky trying to hit savings windows etc or start as soon as possible within the cheap rate, as the dumb timer doesn't let you know it intends to start. The app gives you a prediction of start time as well as end time.

I though heat pump was by design also condenser?

We went heat pump, great decision, the best part is emptying the water tank and seeing how much water DIDN'T go into the house. If you enjoy the pleasure of emptying a dehumidifier you'll love a heat pump drier :D

we switched to heat pump too from vented. Much more efficient. The thing I dont like with our samsung are:
1. fluff build up on the heat exchanger fins,
2. plus sometimes get more of a vibration sound
3. bed sheets get knotted up, something our older indesit vented one never did.

I would not buy samsung again (the main reason was warranty duration), but would look at Bosch etc
