Hi,

Can anyone explain what the different stages are, and what is required for each "Stage" of tuning.

It seems (from reading various different forums) that opinions on what is requires for each stage of tune differs from car to car.

Cheers :)

varies from car to car.

i see daft things like generic software being stage 1, customised software is stage 2 etc etc

it is down to the car and the tuner

what car are you thinking about?

It's just marketing really to describe the level of tuning from a simple air filter and exhaust being a stage 1 upto a full custom rebuild being stage 5 for example

Certainly depends on the car, the 200sx, as an example, if you go the Horsham route you have stages 1, 2 and 3 if you get their pre-mapped chips however they have also brought out 'a' versions of each as well with slightly different requirements.

From what I remember the 3a takes the SX close to 400bhp, however I'm not 100% on that :)

It's very much car specific as to what each stage actually entails! It's just a very generalized terminology to describe each successive increment of modifications to get more power! For my car, assuming your sticking to naturally aspired tuning and speaking to Mountune:

Stage 1 - Breathing mods (induction and exhaust), possibly a remap

Stage 2 - As above but with upgraded cams, again with a map to suit

Stage 3 - As above but with inlet manifold change and another map.

For another car it could well be totally different though. It'd just a quick short way of discussing mods/a general level of tune without having to name specific brands or components.

its completely dependant on, car and who the tuner is. for example my 200sx is stage 1a (270-290bhp) which is, Uprated fuel pump, larger intercooler, full elbow back stainless exhaust, mushroom filter, adjustable actuator and a remap.

It's fairly meaningless and is no guide to how tuned the engine is. A 'stage 3' head from one place can be very different to one from another and they'll never agree on what cam constitutes 'stage 3' tuning.

On a Kent crossflow stage 1 is light flow work and a warm road cam, stage 2 is that plus a hotter cam, more flow work and an oversize inlet valve, stage 3 is extensive flow work, oversize valves and dual valve springs with machined platforms to allow extra lift.

oooh yes, head work is a whole different case of voodoo too

For the 1.8T and Revo

Stage 1 - seems to mean a simple remap and perhaps a forge 007p

Stage 2 - seems to mean a Forge 007p, exhaust and filter

Stage 3 - seems to mean all of the above plus hi-flow cat

My Jaguar is now at Stage 32 and is producing 3200BHP. :D

Typical Stage 1 is either breathing mods or a remap or a combination of both for better results. :)

Typically Stage 1 is simple bolt-ons or a remap.

I'd like to see over 200bhp.

It's currently got a Forge Intercooler, Forge 007P and a CAI.

I'm guessing now without spending mega buck I'll want an exhaust system and a remap?
