Tuning "Stages"

Varies from car to car.

My VX220 is 'stage 2', which is known to have an after market exhaust and a remap.

Stage 3 includes charge cooler kits etc

Stage 4 includes a revised turbo, bigger injectors etc

All varies as said by many others. For example, stages for my car (which is a stage 3):

Stage 1 = Remap only. Raises boost pressure to 1.1 bar from 0.8 and adds some ignition advance. (circa 220hp)

Stage 2 = cat back. Raises boost pressure to 1.2 bar. (a misnomer as this is possible for a stage 1 without even bothering with a cat back. circa 230hp)

Stage 3 = 3" Downpipe + race/de cat. Raises boost Pressure to 1.35 bar (circa 270hp)

Stage 4 = turbo (usually TD04-15T) + intercooler + uprated pressure plate. Raises Boost to 1.4 bar (circa 300hp)

Stage 5 = turbo (usually TD04 hybrid, T25 hybrid or GT28) + injectors + fuel pump. (custom mapping from here, circa 350hp)

Stage 6 = GT3071 or bigger for 400hp +. Custom manifolds and cams are common at this point.

Hi,

Can anyone explain what the different stages are, and what is required for each "Stage" of tuning.

It seems (from reading various different forums) that opinions on what is requires for each stage of tune differs from car to car.

Cheers :)

Typicaly these days:

Stage 1: A lot of money for pointless bolt on tat that will likely reduce power, drivability and economy.

Stage 2: More money for even more pointless modifications, though branded bolt on tat may be supplied.

Stage 3; Huge amount money for something developing just over stock BHP, but overfueling horrendously, but you will get lots of stickers to display the pointless, overpriced tat you have been stupid enough to buy.

I'd like to see over 200bhp.

It's currently got a Forge Intercooler, Forge 007P and a CAI.

I'm guessing now without spending mega buck I'll want an exhaust system and a remap?

I'd have thought a Revo map would see over 200bhp from a standard engine tbh, nevermind with an Intercooler 007P and CAI on it. Stick an exhaust on it and get a remap and jobs a goodun.

Still baffled why someone put those mods on it without a map though :p

Phil.. You have a Forge FMIC don't you?

007p, silicon TIP and other hoses probably, turbo back exhaust, including 3" downpipe and 200 cell sports cat, stage 2 map, you will see 235-240BHP and about 260-270lbft torque.

Spending any more is pointless as the turbo is at it's limit at that point :)

Is it the current shape Octavia or the previous?

Old 1.8t (180bhp with K03s) should see 220 - 240bhp out of a remap.

New ones I believe should see around 270.

Easiest way to gain performance out of these engines is a remap

get yourself on briskoda or clubgti forums.

It means nothing, and makes people look really dumb when they describe things as it with no explanation as to what it means on their specific car from their specific tuner. It comes from the Need for Speed games and games like it, so typically the people who use it to describe their car or a state of tune generally have gained their knowledge from said games, ergo, they are idiots.

Civic Type R EP3s go:

Stage 1 - Spoon socks
Stage 2 - KPro those Spoon socks biznatch
Stage 3 - Mugen gear knob
Stage 4 - All the above + tyre shine y0.

Being an NA each stage costs >£1K.

then you get various stages of components, ie stage 2 heads stage 3 cams

ie my taxi

runs a stage 2 map
stage 3 beaded seatcover
and a stage 5 smell of wee.
it also has a taxi spec stage 2 aero kit(picked the big lumps of dirt off)
