to be honest, that kind of application looks as though it has its flaws. It looks as though it only works if you can manage to put your heatsink on perfectly flat, if you put it on at a slight angle, surely the paste would get forced to just the top or bottom of the heat spreader? i prefer to put a very thin glaze on the cpu, and then a tiny blob on the heatsink

I think the red line covers the edge of the cores so 2 above the line and 2 below, pressure and a slight turn of the heatsink, clockwise and anti- clockwise should spread the AS over all 4 cores.
