Hi. I just bought my first turbo trainer but have no alternative but to use it in the living room with a very expensive carpet. What should I do to protect the underlying carpet? Should I get a rug or a couple of square meters of laminate over the carpet? Is the furniture at any risk of oil flying from the chain etc?

Oil? Not really. Just make sure you have an actual turbo trainer tyre. There are a bunch of horror stories about normal road tyres disintegrating under the heat and leaving marks on the wall.

Thanks for the reply guys. Unfortunately the carpet is light beige and the last time I put a black rubber mat on it, it left a black tint on the carpet so I'm a bit skeptical about that.

IMO, you won't be able to keep the carpet clean. Just find somewhere else for it. Chances are it'll be far too hot for you in the living room anyway.

Some heavy duty rubber matting will be fine. Stick the back wheel as close to a wall as you can and then tape some newspaper up if you're worried about any splatter.

To be honest I'd be more concerned about trying to stop the spit, snot and sweat going everywhere than I would be a little bit of grease from the cassette & chain :p

As Touch says you will cook inside without a very good fan even then you will still bake.

That's pretty much me... dripping everywhere.
