Istanbul
When was the track built?
Work began on the circuit in Akfirat, around an hour’s drive east of Istanbul, in 2003, with the Hermann Tilke-designed track readied in August 2005, having had $40 million lavished on it.

When was its first Grand Prix?
No sooner had the track opened than it was hosting the inaugural Turkish Grand Prix on August 21, a drama-filled race won by McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, with Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher famously coming together when Webber tried to unlap himself.

What’s the circuit like?
There’s no doubt that Istanbul is one of the best tracks ever penned by Tilke, with parts of the circuit having been compared over the years to similar features at Spa-Francorchamps, Interlagos and Laguna Seca. The crown jewel of Intercity Istanbul Park, however, remains Turn 8, an incredibly fast, bumpy, multi-apex downhill left-hander that’s a proper test of drivers’ commitment.

Thanks @Shimmy

They can over take on every part of this track.
So I'm hoping for the best race of the season.

And of coarse turn 8 should be peddle to the metal.

Thanks as always Shimmy :)

Very much looking forward to this race, just like Imola, seeing how the cars are now to when they last raced, also a decent track which provides decent overtaking. Such a shame this track got dropped as there are others which are way worse. One of my favourite tracks in Simbin's Race 07

They brought the right tyres according to the data they had. For some reason the track was resurfaced at the last minute then the organisers thoroughly wet a cold tarmac before the fp1 practice which took around 45 mins to dry out...

I'm loving it myself. It's great to see them struggling and power sliding around.

We all thought they would blow away the lap record, yet in FP1 they were slower than GP2 was 11 years ago. :D

Mercedes off the pace. Hamilton to win on Sunday then.
Hamilton had the best average stint in FP2 and Bottas was just behind him, so they're not off the pace at all. Verstappen was 3-4 tenths off.

Nobody looks at the absolute fastest times in free practice as they have very little bearing on the actual pace when it matters.
