Any recommendations for a couple of good turn based strategy games?

I haven't really played any before so all suggestions welcome

Cheers

Can you narrow it down a bit? Setting/timeline etc?

Currently I'd really recommend Disciples 2 or 3. In the same vein, the King's Bounty games are mental and awesome.

Elven Legacy is a bit older but still great and you can get the collection really cheap nowadays.

If you want staggering scale and detail, something by Paradox like Hearts of Iron 3. Not really turn-based but ponderous enough and pausable while you issue commands.

Solium Infernum plays like a boardgame but I can't recommend it highly enough. Great in single player, amazing in multiplayer, and dripping with atmosphere.

Space Empires 4 still hasn't been bested in the sci-fi grand strategy category as far as I'm concerned.

Frozen Synapse. More tactical than strategic but frigging amazing!

Are you interested in turn based as in large scale world strategy
- civ games or Europa Universallis

or turn based unit strategy
- Heroes of Might and Magic or King's Bounty

Your best bet is to try the demos of them for yourself. I know I had an absolute blast playing King's Bounty The Legend and Crossworlds. I have spent a lot of time playing Europa Universallis with the expansions as well. Never managed to really get engrossed by the latest Civ5 myself.

Aren't TW games considered turn based strategy games?

They're excellent.

Mhm. Empire, Napoleon, Shogun 2 if you want newer stuff, but Medieval 2 is great and I hear awesome things about Rome but keep forgetting to buy it when I go on a Steam shopping spree. :p

Do not start playing these games.

The hours, days, weeks, maybe even months that I spent (wasted?) on Civilization 2 makes me cringe.

Still dip into it occasionally
