Turned down for yet another job.

Thanks guys, i appreciate all the good wishes!

I see what people mean when they say you have to be in the right place at the right time.

Give me my lucky break! :)

To Jonny69: Yeah i've been looking to get into the BBC actually, being a runner is most definitely a good foot in the door, but sadly, i've heard nothing back from them. I'm not too skilled on the special effects front im afraid, im more of a project manager type!

If that's what you want to go into, you need to start as a runner. I work in film post-production, and nearly everyone got to the position they are in now through starting as a runner.

It's minimum wage, unforgiving work but it may get you where you want to go. It's the reason so few people who do media degrees actually go into the media, because you have to start right from the bottom.

Send your CV to every single one of the production/post-production places you can find in London. You may eventually get something.

A bit like you i'm reluctant to take on a job that doesn't give me a future, but eventually we all have to bite the bullet (when the money runs out?).

Yeah it's true, just wish it didn't have to be that way!

Unfortunately, London is the epicentre of everything media related thats even vaguely close to me. £35 a day travel isn't really possible for me, and i have to get the job in the first place. Most companies would pick people living in London rather than commuters i imagine. I know i would!

Depends really. I know firms who would rather have someone who wants to commute distances like that because it shows they actually want the job.

£35 a day? You sure? With a season ticket & Oyster card, it will be lower than that I would imagine.

Rubbish.. they don't care as long as you get in.

I'm not from Reading but you need to check out the season ticket prices as they are lot cheaper to the daily rate. I commute from Chelmsford.. That's arounf £28pd but around £2,600 pa. We have guys here who commute from Ipswich to London.

I have no qualms about starting from the bottom, as long as it's a relevant company/industry, im all for it!

Any company names you could give me would be appreciated :)

Ok, i may have been wrong regarding the commuter comment. I'm anxious, forgive me! :p

As a runner, I was commuting in from outside of London, an hour's journey each way. Would be around £16 a day I think from where I was, meaning half my months wages went on travel. But this is offset by living at home with the parents.

I know plenty of people who commute in, and one girl I worked with when I was runner commuted in from Reading. So you have totally the wrong attitude to be honest!

just got back from an interview myself

in the same boat really, a lot of interview recently, a couple of temp jobs.. yet nothing secure since graduation.

hopefully something will turn around soon, if not, i'ma start applying in london/bristol/etc

going for a web dev role

Plenty of web dev roles around though right? See lots of them on the recruitment websites, especially with C# in mind.

Ok, i got it wrong about commuting, i do have the right attitude, i want to get somewhere! Sorry if it didn't come across as such!

I withdrew the commuter thing in my previous post as i realised it was dumb of me :)

Unfortunately, i haven't got any skill with web developing, im quite curious about it though, and have been meaning to read more into it.

I am in the same boat, apply and get nowhere, I cant get a dam thing, even apply for plain old input jobs and get nothing, I get sorry your skills set dose not match our requirements. Well excuse me for ever learning anything more than how to switch on a pc and type.

Even so I still apply everyday to every job I know I could do given the chance. One thing though a while back I did not say on my CV that I had a disability of sorts, quote from CV,

The condition is a peripheral neuropathy, I have loss of coordination and limited use of my thumbs but good strength in my fingers. My legs are paralysed bellow the knee but I am still able to walk well using leg worn splints to support my ankles and feet.

I did not put this in my CV before but was told if I did not tell any potential employer before interview I could be turned down flat. But before I added this I had lots more feedback from prospective employers now I only get around a third of the contact I used to before I added that I have a disability. Makes me wonder if I should take it out again but I just want to be honest and it has no effect on my chosen work. In fact I am probably fitter than a lot of people in the kind of jobs I apply for needing to exercise and throw weights around and box to try my best to keep in shape. 36 and I have an 8 pack where most have a belly. Whatever anyone says I think employers are scared of taking on a burden so I get turned down. Read into this whatever you like but I did get about three times more calls and and contact from prospective employers before I added the above into my CV.

not trying hard enough.

you can easily commute as you've already said. personally i think you've come here for a bit of a ego boost which you aren't going to get. you live in reading, not rangoon, get on with it.

I'm having similar issues, but it's down to experience. Have had some excellent interviews but it always boils down to experience. I had one interview which went so, so marvellously. I got on so well with them, but in the end someone who had done the job before came along. The guy recommended me for another role which went the same way.

The worst part is I know people who have had a lucky break despite having no idea what they're doing :(

Wrong on so many levels. I came here for a rant, like most people on forums. I'm liking the responses i have been getting as they've been informative to me, and it's nice (in a respect) to see im not alone in my situation.

I would have ideally liked to work in Reading for the time being, as i would like the money, so that i don't have to depend on my parents place to live and so i can eventually move to london and get a more suited job. However, as my OP says, i have been unsuccessful in garnering a job, regardless of area of expertise.

So don't go saying im looking for an ego boost when im clearly not.

Nothing wrong with an ego boost neither - we all need topping up from time to time!

You fill me up, i'll fill... okay that sounds bad.

What sort of experience do you have - if your looking for a Project Management type role have you looked in to working as a Digital Producer at an advertising agency or similar?

I am a Digital Producer living n Reading but working in London. I have just moved to a new company and they are going to be training me in Television Production over the next few months.

I can give you the name of a good couple of recruitment consultancy that specialise in this field.

There are a couple of places you can work in Reading too - I had a couple of interview offers from places when I was looking. But I was aiming of getting out of Reading so it was no good to me.
