Turning Wireless Into Wired

Hi All,

In the next few months I'll be moving into some other student accommodation and this time they have wireless and not wired ethernet. I have emailed the landlord who says that installing Ethernet is not an option :( seriously bad times.....

Network hardware I have now:

Belkin N1 Vision
Netgear WGR614v9
8port Gigabit switch

Devices I want to connect up:

Desktop - with no wireless
3 x laptops
1 x netbook
Blackberry

I still want to use my switch which will go into the Belkin but then how will the Belkin connect to the internet? Is this possible at all or will I need to invest in another router?

By the way the only reason I want to do this is because I want my own network away from everyone else where everything is faster and more secure, having my own wireless using the Netgear would be pretty cool as well :)

Hopefully this all made sense to some of you and you can shout out some pretty good ideas to get this all working :)

Look at powerline routers and then just run that to your switch or netgear.

The netgear won't be connecting to the internet, it'll just be connecting to the main router in the house. You'll need to change some settings on your router too. i.e.DHCP.

Having you parition off your own network isn't going to make anything faster and I doubt there'd be that many network security issues in a student house.

Sorry I should have also said that I do not have access to the router or access points that are located around the house.

Therefore plugging in a powerline, which would have been a great idea, can't be done :(

Landlord sounds a bit harsh.

If you dont have access to the router then there is not much you can do really is there,
apart from get a wireless card for your PC which is seriously crap.

Wireless Bridging possibilites

If your landlord will let you place an extra router next to the co existing router then you can create a wireless bridge as long as you have 2 wireless routers. Another alternative is ICS (internet connection service) which means you could set up a server to pickup the wireless signal and pass it out through ethernet. THIS WOULD BE EXTREMELY SLOW! As you have no access to the router then there really isnt very much that you can do! Sorry if this is a pointless reply (kind of) whatever you do, i wish you luck!

Dave.

Bug a wireless bridge, set it to connect to the existing network then use the lan side of the bridge to the WAN port of your router (both are cable routers so pick the one you like the most) and then just set it up as normal.

DD-WRT = The answer to everyone's network problems :)

DD-WRT is firmware that can be put on to many different routers, unlocking a load of different features.
In this case, you can set it up to be a wireless bridge to connect to the wireless, then use the built in, or another, switch to hook up all your wired devices.

Your Netgear router is currently still set as "work in progress" to support DD-WRT but the Belkin may already be supported - What's the model number and version of it?

YOu will end up with something similar to this:

you could use a combination of dd-wrt and another router to create your own private network if that is what you want to do

Last time I checked (and that was using two cisco wireless devices) you had to enable wireless bridge on the first router in order for the second one to be able to work fully... or does DD-WRT get around this? This is more of a question to Gary-H21...

Nah, first router doesn't need to know. I've got a netgear with standard firmware on it downstairs next to my modem and 2 DD-WRT routers upstairs connected to it - works great.

Or just buy...you know... a wireless bridge. :/

Could do... but there's a chance one of the routers he already has can be used to do this anyway and as he's a student, money saving is always a bonus :p

Thanks for all the replies, I think that DD-WRT is the way forward with this however none of my routers are supported. Therefore can anyone recommend a wireless N router that would be fully compatible with DD-WRT??

Cheers again, Tom

D-Link DIR-615 Revision D4 - That's the one I use, got it for around a tenner.

All revisions of this model are supported and it was easy to do the update!

Hi Gary,

Picked one of them routers (revision D4) up for £20 brand new. Hopefully it will do the job just fine.

Could you post some instructions on how to set up the bridging once I manage to get DD-WRT on it?

Hopefulling flashing it with DD-WRT shouldn't be too hard :/

Excellent! It will do exactly what you need! I've got one sitting next to me that this computers bridged through :D

Flashing it was a piece of cake :p I'll put together all the instructions, download links and settings you need!

Thanks Gary, if only there was a way to give heat or points to people on here! You've been really helpful!

Hi Gary, got the router yesterday and managed to flash it, however I'm just testing to see if I can bridge it up to my current network however no matter how many guides I follow I cannot get it to work, can you post some instructions on how to bridge it up? Cheers, Tom

Hi Gary,

I've tried all the settings I can and cannot get it to work. No matter what tutorial/instructions/guides I follow it just wont connect up.

Any suggestions?
