Turning your computer off before bed.

get a very low powered and quiet machine and use that for downloading, keep it in another room or in a cupboard

use remote desktop to control it from your main pc

simple

my gaming pc is set to sleep after 5 mins of inactivity, the amount of power a quad core and fairly high end graphics card use will soon add up

MacBook has saved me this pain. Although before I got the MacBook, the PowerMac G4 I had was really loud. So loud infact that I didn't want to turn it on during the day O.o :D:D

I sleep fine with the loud fans and blue lights being on my desk next to the bed; so never turn it off :D

In fact never turn of the laptop; the file server or the desktop pc all of which are on/by/under my desk next to the bed

havent turned my pc off since i built it, except for restarts / holiday etc

downloads auto begin at 4am - 7am (group feed) and so when im up i dont have to wait 2 hours

I specifically built my PC for silence - got out of the overclocking malarky as it made the PC so damn loud. The loudest thing I can hear in my room at night are the prostitutes shouting on the streets!
Passive PSU, a massive heatsink and 1 120mm silent fan = heaven.

With the aid of the Transmission client installed on my Popcorn my PC now goes off every night and doesn't come on again till I need it.
I used to have it on 24/7 with downloads and Boinc running, a recent aim of cutting down my bills and saving on waisted money put a stop to that :)

it's not 'the planet' i care about by using sleep mode, it's my pocket!

seems daft to leave pc's on all day when they take about 2-3 seconds to return from sleep mode.

having a low power machine to download with a gigabit network to your machine = win..

my machine is low power even when clocked. I doubt it uses much more than 100W when downloading
