I currently have an old 65" LG LCD panel which we use as our main TV.

It was pretty cheap at the time and has lasted a good few years without issue.

It struggles however with dark scenes and motion on it is pretty bad, you get ghosting on some things and I have just put up with it until we were in a position where we were looking to replace.

We want to replace it soon and I think I've narrowed the choices down to the following:

Sony A80J (65")
Samsung QN90A (75")

The sizes are different due to price differences, I don't think I can justify the 77" Sony as it is over 1k more.

Reviews are pretty good on both, I just wondered if anyone had any real world experience / input on what they would recommend.

Thanks

Damn, that's a hard choice haha. If it was 65" vs 65", I'd say hands down go for the Sony, as it's an absolute beast of a TV. However if you can fit 75" then I'd probably be swayed more towards that.

What's the main purpose of the TV going to be ? Normal TV? Movies ? Gaming ?

What type of room is it going in? Very bright, bright, medium, darkish?

You are basically going two ends of the spectrum with these models. Samsung super super bright HDR picture, where as a the Sony is black as black can be and it's more personal preference as to which you find the better picture. Sure you could probably see both TVs in somewhere like Currys.

Obviously you get not Dolby vision on the Samsung as well.

Would suggest having a read of:

Mainly streaming content from netflix etc. No game use until it is repurposed into the office.

Room is brightish during the day, but in the evening we close blinds etc.

Yeah the size diff for the prices is difficult, I guess it becomes simpler if I look at the C1 which is a lot less than the 75" samsung.

Just don't want to end up with issues with dark scenes etc again, so I guess I should just take the plunge and go Oled... I had pretty much made up my mind until a friend showed me I could get the next size up in samsung for not a lot more.

I have the CX in 55 and it's definitely better than my last TV but there have been many comments that the cx (and oled in general) just can't get as bright as other technologies. Obviously colour accuracy and deep blacks are in the oleds corner.

The link provided sums it up well.

The Samsung QN90A QLED and the Sony A80J OLED use different panel types, but both offer amazing performance. The Sony is an OLED with a near-infinite contrast ratio, while the Samsung has a VA panel, so its native contrast is more limited. The Samsung uses Mini LED backlighting, and its local dimming feature allows it to produce exceptionally deep blacks. You may, however, notice a bit of blooming, especially when viewing off-angle, whereas the Sony has no visible blooming. The biggest advantage the Samsung has over the Sony is that it gets exceptionally bright, so it's better for bright rooms and can bring out more highlights in HDR.

Personally after seeing a friend's 65" and another friends 75" the absolute experience of that size of TV wins against blackest of blacks.

It's a tough choose though and depends entirely on the size of the room its intended for.

If it's a 4 bed plus detached home then 75" for me. If it's a smaller home with smaller rooms then 65" OLED. Obviously that's not a hard and fast rule but just roughly where I think the border is on average and obviously there are exceptions to this like extremely large townhouses, etc.

Update:

I bought the Samsung QN94 75" as a decent deal came up (same panel as 95 but no connect box) - Will only use this for gaming years down the line when it's replaced.. so the 1x HDMI 2.1 wasn't really an issue. I also had nowhere to put the connect box for the 95a.

Worked out £140 more than buying the 65" Sony A80J with the burn in protection from JL.

Thanks for all the comments and insight.
