been having a look at the tv cards and there seems to be huge range in price from £20 to over £100. how much is it worth paying for one and can anyone recommend a good one to purchase? also how easy are they to install?

finally when I get back to uni will I have to pay for a tv liscence? and if I do can I just not use the card and avoid paying or will I have to remove it when I'm at uni?

thanx,
DM

edit: oh and my motherboard is an asus p5n32-e 680i if that helps :)

TV card I would recommend would be Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T 500 Dual digital DVB-T PCI TV Tuner card. Dual tuner freeview, works with Vista and Media Center 2005.

The TV license thing is a bit hazy ... when I bought one years ago from "EDIT - cool the way it puts stars in place of the shop name, apologies", I was made to fill in details which means the tv license people send you a letter. The one above I bought from an online seller did not require me to provide any details. They may have an internal policy which means the tv licensing people will contact you. Am not too sure.

Depends on the property,

if your in halls you usually have to buy your own license the reasons is due to there being a lock on your door it is classed as a single dwelling. however, if your in rented house you only need 1 licences to cover everyone.

its riduclous really as in halls there are hundreds of you, there should be some kind of group dwelling discount esp for those at uni. i know at my uni someone got find £2000 for not having the license, the guy next door had his TV on too at the same time and didn't get fined and he didn't have a license either! talk about unlucky. i'm sure they were just having to hit a quota of fines per day......

I have a Nebula Electronics PCI TV card and the quality is great - google them as ill prolly get slapped wrists for posting a link.

The do a PCI card and USB version form between £85 and £90 including a remote - picture quality is spot on - the only probs for me at the moment is the shoddy Vista driver support :(

hmm no-one seems to have many Hauppauge cards in stock atm. anyone know the cause of this and when I could expect some more in?

also I assume this will fit in my board?

If you've got pci-express get the terratec cinergy 2400i dt. It's dual tuner, picture is flawless, works in vista and comes with remote. I picked mine up for £67 new!! Software ain't bad either :)
