TV for new house - 1080p or 4k advice needed please

"apparently" 4K blu-rays / players should be out by xmas this year. I would expect 4K to kick off properly in 2016 with the majority of films coming out in 4K.

I'm debating this at the moment myself. we have a 42" LG 1080p in teh lounge but sit approx 11feet away from it so its a bit small.

Would deffinatly not go Sony again after the last 1 I had. Totally died after 13 months 800 quid sony smart 3D and the power unit went and took the entire TV with it.

I'm considering a 55" LG 4K smart as i'm due my bonus next month and would go nicely.

55'' 4K would be a waste of time at 11ft, it's too far away

i was after a massive Sony LED but all the bad posts on AV Forum put me off, so i'm going to view a Panny ST 65'' tomorrow

I disagree. You'll see a qualitative improvement, like looking at text printed at 300 dpi and comparing it with text printed at 600 dpi. You can't see the individual differences but you can see the overall difference.

Sat 7 to 8 feet away the eye can't tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on a 50" screen, so going for 4k will be a complete waste of money

i quote

``If you want to see the benefits of 4k at 7-8 feet you need a screen size of 55" plus to even start to see the difference and around 110" to see the full benefit. If you are happy with 50" as a screen size then just completely forget 4k exists.

It amazes me how many people spend a fortune upgrading to a higher resolution TV yet sit at a distance that makes it impossible for the eye to resolve the difference. Unless you are willing to buy a huge screen or sit right on top of it 4k only really comes into its own on projectors with 100"+ screens.``

my 50'' screen was too small at 9.5 feet ............ let alone 11ft, i got rid of mine after a month and got the 55'' screen instead.

the ideal viewing distance of a 55'' screen is about 7ft

It's funny when people talk about 4k, as they only debate the resolution differences between 4k and 1080i/p as if that's the only improvement.

You don't have to be sat an inch from the screen to see the improvements 4k will bring

I can see the difference on my 4k monitor from my bed and thats only a 28".

At this rate might as well buy a 40" 4k and some deck chairs so i can sit 2ft in front of the tv

i saw an end of line Samsung LED 1080P only and it looked pretty good, it had no problems with viewing angles/washed out/banding and once it was adjusted it was close to my Plasma............Samsung aren't making 1080p tvs any more, the 2015 models are all 4K, it looks like 1080p tvs are dieing out.

i did not see the Sammy LED at night, so i cant comment on backlight issues...unfortunately.

the SAMMY 65'' SUHD looks flipping awesome on a 4K Demo, almost as good as the OLED, but it looked much worst on BBC HD/Freeview HD which is what nearly all of you will be watching for the next 5 years.

the 4k looks worst on BBC HD than a standard 1080p tv.

4K YES.............but if you choose to watch HD TV, you'll be on 720p or 1080i upscaled to 4k, it looks blurry and lacks sharpness

strangely enough the Sammy 65'' 4K TV does indeed look utterly brilliant at 4ft away............ i saw no pixels  so i expect it'll make a really good gaming monitor, but maybe 42'' is more sensible :D:D

but did 4ft away from a 65'' Demo 4k tv feel ok to the eye :eek:??..........yea it looked fine, in fact i ended up at 3ft away, i could have stood there all day long..........UTTERLY BRILLIANT :D:D

unfortunately the 65'' Panasonic plasma is far too heavy to move on my own, let alone carry from my car and into my house
