Hi there

Sorry if this is old news but it is new to me. Somebody just told me that you need a TV license for a PC? So even if I am not online or have TV tuner or whatever you need to watch TV on a PC I need to pay over £100. I don't have a TV and I don't watch TV on my PC and will not even be online in a few weeks with no internet connection.

From their website:

You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.

Would I still have to be this mafia tax?

Michael

nope, you don't need it. You only need it if you:
A) have something with a tv tuner in it
B) have that tuner tuned into stations.

indeed, you only need it if you have a TV tner card

tho i wonder what the score is if you try to watch video on the bbc site..

Anything that can receive TV signals requires a license

Anything that is tuned in to receive tv signals, it doesn't matter if it could potentially receive broadcasts just if it's actually tuned in (a minor point, but as any TV can receive the signals, but you don't need a licence if you only use the TV for DVD's, computer or similar display, or CCTV etc it's worth remembering :)).

You have to be careful of the handheld "TV detectors" they use. They have flashy lights and make beep beep noises. The TV detector vans were my personal favorite, a bloke sitting in the back with no actual equipment other than a clip board and a pen (or pencil) as it not possible to detect TV radiation from other background radiation. They have no rights of entry what so ever, so if you get on at your door, either tell them to go away or ask them to prove you have a TV without entering your property.

Don't get me wrong, I think the BBC should get founding, but it may as well be adverts tbh. The amount of adverts for upcoming TV shows they have between shows, they may as well advertise products there. It would also give you time to nip to the loo. In these enlightened days of Satalite and Cable subscription TV, there really is no need to pay this.

You seriously thought you'd need a TV license for something which you can't watch TV on?

Just for arguments sake do you require a licence if you redirect satellite broadcasts through your pc if you do not watch the BBC? Presumably you would have paid a subscription for the satellite signals and the free channels would be free: the onus would be on you to show you did not watch or receive BBC? I was wondering if you could exclude BBC from the tuner? I am not advocating anything illegal here just a potential option. I also wonder what the BBC would think if you could choose not to watch their service and in so doing not have to pay for it lol

you would need a licence its a TV licence not a bbc Licence.

I don't think it actually has anything to do with the BBC, other than they get revenue from the Government. Regardless of watching the BBC, if you have a tuner which is capable and tuned to receive TV transmissions, you need a TV license. Its a bit like driving a car, you need a license to do so, but it really doesn't matter where you drive.

edit ^^ like what Acid said.

but the BBC are the whole reason for the license, thats why the BBC has no adverts. If there was no BBC there'd be only independent TV stations and no license.

It doesn't just go to the BBC; e.g. C4's digital switch over bill will be paid by license fees.

C4 with no adverts!? seriously?

I'd be totally happy paying for that, channel 4 stations (e4 more4 etc) is the only stations i watch.
