TV License question

Actually it is legally skating on thin ice... but I think its just inside the law... (as far as the contract bit goes above) - someone could probably spend a ton of money challenging it in court and find enough flaws that it wouldn't be illegal to not pay but until tested things are as they stand.

But stop being cheapskates and if you actually watch TV pay for it and have a little respect for yourself and other people.

Well, enjoy the proceeds of your crime.

No more than the lying scumbags on the BBC gravy chain enjoy the proceeds of there crimes from dumbing down the population and spreading government propaganda. The lack of coverage and spin regarding climategate being a good example.

I do have repsect for myself and other people. I also couldn't care less if the BBC go off air, in fact they'd be doing the nation a favour.

I heard somewhere and thus thought:

  • License fee is to be payed if you watch live BBC TV.
  • The law allows a fine of up-to £1,000 if you are prosecuted for watching live BBC TV without having purchased a TV License.
  • For them to prove you've been watching live BBC TV they'd need to enter your land (trespass) or enter your house (search warrant required). The 'TV Detector' vans don't work.
  • The odds on them getting a search warrant to enter your house... nil.

Has anyone ever had a TV License Inspector visit them? Do they legaly have to ask to enter your property because I've heard some people say they'll try and invite themselves in and just walk in once you open you door?

Not here but a lady living on the other side of the road did... she wasn't paying the license and you could plainly see her big screen TV through the frontroom windows... inspectors were almost killing themselves laughing at her denials of having a TV while you could plainly see it was playing live TV. They tried fairly agressively to gain entry but didn't force an entry... dunno what the conclusion was but the TV has gone now.

EDIT: My mum who talks to her flat-mate says they sent her a threatening letter about what would happen to her if she didn't buy a license within 7 days but nothing else has happened.

There are more varieties of law than just contract law. I'd bet that there's a licensing act or something that applies the tv license.

Yawn!

Do some research! ..... forget the ******* BBC, receiving live TV broadcasts of any sort = license required.

YES, it's a legal requirement to pay it if you use any kind of equipment to watch live broadcasts. (Note you have to be using the equipment - you don't require a license to own a television, fully plugged into the mains and an aerial... but good luck proving you don't use it if it does come down to that!)

NO, you don't have to give a TV licensing officer access to your property, unless they turn up with the police and a warrant. This is very unlikely. If they DO manage however, you will get in trouble if they catch you watching the box.

I meant as far as that bit in the first post about contract law, etc. goes it would be skating on thin ice, but just about legal for all intents or purposes.

Just to reiterate what others have said above, it's a broadcast receiving license, not a "BBC" license. They may get a fair wedge of it, but even if you detuned all the BBC stations from your TV and just watched commercial channels you'd still need to pay it. In fact, (as far as I know) if you had satellite television and deleted all the channels from your satelllite receiver that are also broadcast terrestrially, you'd still need to pay the license fee. :)
