tv license

As far as I knew, if you have a receiver/tuner that is even capable of receiving TV signals, you have to have a licence.

And thats what the scum like you to believe,

If you don't watch live broadcasts (note this does include the live stuff on iPlayer, but not the recorded stuff after it's been aired) then you don't need a TV Licence.

But you do need a TV Licence if you watch *any* live broadcast, on the BBC or not, even though the large majority of the licence fee goes solely to the BBC.

I could understand this argument if it was a gun.

But then thats the law. The law doesnt say you need a tv licence to have a tv.

me and my bro were debating this the other day.

If I have an LCD TV in my room upstairs that isnt connected to the tv aerial thats down stairs - Im not going to pay for a TV licence especially when Im not using it as a tv (used as pc monitor).

The problem is the op states he does watch tv but not much.

It's all or nothing.

i just meant i watch a little, so won't miss it.

i only watch tv at the moment just for something to do. very rarely am i bothered about something. prefer watching films.

Also, just out of interest, how the hell do those detector vans work? I can't see how they can. Tv's don't have some wireless thing that sents out information does it... it only receives...

This is what really bugs me. I think the license is good value but the way they market themselves as some sort of mafia group who you need to pay "protection" to is appalling.

at my uni halls we get about 3 letters per term to everyone, which is thousands of people, and everyone just bins em without reading them, such a waste of money and resources.

As everyone else has said nope.

How do people get so confused? even when it tells you on the licensing website.

You must be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV. It makes no difference what equipment you use - whether it’s a laptop, PC, mobile phone, digital box, DVD recorder or a TV set - you still need a licence.

Do I need a TV Licence if I only watch programmes online?

It makes no difference how you watch TV - whether it's on your laptop, PC or mobile phone or through a digital box, DVD recorder or TV set - if you use any device to receive television programmes as they're being shown on TV, the law requires you to be covered by a TV Licence.

You will not need a TV Licence to view video clips on the internet, as long as what you are viewing is not being shown on TV at the same time as you are viewing it.

What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?

You do not need a TV Licence if you only use your TV to watch videos and DVDs or as a monitor for your games console.

Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:

I do the same now, the only reason why they keep going is because the majority still pay.

Pretty harsh thing to say.
They should change the law - the License fee goes a hell of a long way.
