sorry in advance, if this question seems silly, but.

i have a laptop with xp pro installed and quite a bit of my data saved on it.i now find that i need via the job i do i require to, have windows 98 installed as well.

is it possible to have the system to dual boot (ie 98 and xp) and is there an easy way of getting 98 on without disrupting my xp install and saved data.

thanks in advance for any help. gary

the 1 bugger is you already have xp installed, if it was the other way round would be easier (more automatic)

1stly u need to create a partition on your hd of say 15gb for windows 98. using a tool such has partition magic. then, if memory serves 98SE had a bootable cd? if it does boot from startup into 98 install, select the new partition as your 98 install, and then let it install.

however, it ocures to me then that because its xp then 98, u will ahve to manualy edit the boot ini, so that u will get the option of selecting which OS you want.

sorry, from memory i cannot remember exact details to do that, and i know this guide wasnt too hot.

a simple google 'XP and 98 install' - type, may give the answer your looking for though.

// i have found the exact thing u need.
seems to explain a lot better then me!

Maybe install VMWare and run win98 as a virtual machine. That's what i would choose anyway. Saves worrying about partitioning, and you don't have to reboot the computer to swap from one OS to the other.

Tell You the absolute easiest way if You have Partition magic

Clean up and defrag Your xp
create a 1 gig primary partition for W98
install boot magic to your xp install ( and configure it to boot XP and soon to be W98 partition) on boot select the W98 partition and install 98

a better way would be to also add a logical partition (remember it will need to be Fat 32) called Data or whatever, there You could keep anything You need to get at from either opperating system without the need to keep rebooting

However You go about it back up any critical data to a DVD or something first

Good luck
