Twitter and facebook

Go outside and shout what you are thinking ... that's Twitter.

Write what you are thinking on a wall and maybe paste up a picture. Then allow your "friends" to comment on it. ... that's Facebook.

There's nothing wrong with either of them ... in both cases it's garbage-in, garbage-out. If you are an idiot or have friends which are idiots then you'll probably end up in a mess and wasting time. Remember not to post things which you wouldn't want a potential (or current) boss to read publicly.

Facebook is basically the new Faceparty (a glorified MSN Profiles) and Twitter is where you write a personal account / journal thing (web log, shortened to a 'blog'). Wordpress is a more elaborate version of Twitter where you can add hi-res photos and more formatting. MySpace is geared towards unsigned bands as with Soundclick, where Flickr is geared towards a photo-journal. deviantART is geared towards art, photography and OS customisation (like customiz.org). On all of the above sites though, users can add each other onto a buddy list and 'follow' them.

Heh, thats some short blog. 140 characters? @whateveritsnameis takes up a fair bit before your message. And leaves you typing like a 5 year old.

Also, timeline is not what I call glorified. It's a mess.

DeviantART is like Facebook for the masses. But dribbble is not.

I'm not familiar with timeline. Are you referring to what I wrote about Facebook?

P.S. There's LinkedIn as well which is geared towards businesses / professionals.

My understanding is that classmates-type sites like Friends Reunited aren't classified as social networking? That's because old classmates are trying to find each other then private-message or email each other as opposed to following each other's profile pages?
