Two Drown in Ardrossan Reservoir

Also mentions they had been fishing near the dam end. You dive in there and chances are it's exceptionally deep with no where to put your feet down or pull your self out. Plus it was 8pm and cold.

As soon as your calf cramps up and you get immobilised you will be in trouble.

Freaks me out even thinking about swimming in a reservoir near a dam.

Same, as someone mentioned above near the dam itself there can be quite nasty currents that can drag even a very able swimmer beneath the surface.

Used to swim in lakes all the time as a kid but never reservoirs and even the lakes never went out beyond a few feet.

I heard on the news a few weeks back where they had dragged a dead kid out of some lake & whilst the rescue people were still there other kids were trying to go swimming in the same spot. :p Weird how some of us get away with our stupid kids behavior & others die doing the simplest of things.

My dad has a narrowboat and has owned one or two for years so i'm ware of water and the idiots who abuse it in summer.

yobs jumping into locks as they fill up, or off the 'Th'Iron Donger' along the Rochdale canal into about 4-5ft of water...

What surprises me is that we haven't had more death related incidents in the water in this country tbh,.

Open water swimming gets a bad rep because people overestimate their abilities. A strong swimmer is very unlikely to come into trouble in a disused, still body of water after a particularly warm summer. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go for a swim there.

I'm pretty sure factors like inability to swim and alcohol use have been overlooked in this story.
