Why oh why would this happen TWICE in 3 months (around 3000miles)?

The first time, i had some gearbox work done at a well known Ford tuner, and if im honest im 100% sure they broke it, as it was fine when it went in, but my wheel was covered in grease within a week of getting it back.

It got replaced by another garage (as the tuner refused to do it) at the cost of £120+£30 for tracking. The replacement was a dull soft rough rubber boot, while the original was a hard plastic like shiny boot. This replacement has now failed on the seam. From the looks of it, two parts of the boot are rubbing on each other as the car moves/steers and its worn out the top edge.

What will the garage that fitted that say? "Not our problem?"

Cleaning up CV grease is horrible!

Use the official ford part instead of a generic sized replacement, I'd take it back to the place that last fitted it

As above.

£150 for a cheap generic CV boot? I'm almost certain you could have an an OEM one fitted at Ford for that, or possibly even less.

Part probably cost £5 tops. It took them 2 hours. Maybe i need to find another garage...

I had one done, part was £50 labour was the killer.

I bought my car and 1 went, they replaced it for free then the 2nd went 3 months later. Very annoying

The top of the folds on rubber CV boots always rub together a bit under lots of steering lock or suspension travel, which shows as a thin shiny band of rubber but that won't be why it's failed. Far more likely it's simply a very poor quality item, much like the rack gaiters that a local company fitted when they "reconditioned" the steering rack on my Fiat Coupe. Within 6 months they had quite literally rotted and fallen to bits.

The first one was very likely caused by the garage since they would have had to remove the driveshafts if the gearbox needed to come out. That's not to say it wasn't getting a bit tired anyway of course.

Who did you take it to the first and second times? Just curious really, places to avoid especially the first....

Mountune for diff fitting (plus broken cv joint and loose brake line) and elite rainham for bad replacement cv gaiter.

Does the seam run the length of the boot? Possible they fitted a universal part, which are prone to failing imo. I would be surprised tho with that being elite

It's a Mondeo spec part but it's not a offical ford part. Going to goto ford parts tomorrow and get the real deal. Hopefully elite will do something for me seeing as its pretty much unacceptable for a part to fail so soon after. When I say it's worn, it's like a badly worn tyre, really rough and flaking apart. What really are my rights on this? Was October when it was fitted.

the real part only comes with both parts (inner and outer) and is £35. Does that sound right?

Part F1361309.
