two hard drives wont work at same time

Hi all. I am trying to use a 250gig maxtor and a 250gig samsung both IDE on the same IDE cable on my DS3.
They both work individually but not togetther. Upon start up where it says what drives you have the writing is all messed up with both pluuged in. Vista is on my sata hard drive and both the IDEs are set to slave. Why wont they work?? very anoying. please help.

If on the same cable 1 needs to be master and the other slave - not both slaves.

Quite right. The Master/Slave relationship just defines which device is which on an IDE channel, not which drive to boot. The BIOS is for that.
