Hi Guys.

I am currently trying to set up my own wired router in my room to link all my computers to the internet. To do this i purchased a Netgear DG834 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-016-NG)
, which works fine when it is the only router plugged into out phone line.

However, my father uses a netgear wireless router in his office and when this is plugged in my router fails to find the internet connection. The phone line in my room is an extension of the one from the office.

My question is, am i able to run two routers on the same internet line. I can see no reason why i am unable to do this, but then again i am a n00b when it comes to networks :p

Many thanks

Wiz

Why not just have the Wireless router in your room so you can utilise the ethernet and let your father continue using the wireless?

You should be able to network the 2 routers up using RJ45 plugs. Assuming the one which you have can be turned into a switch. You may need to make a crossover cable to connect the two, thats only if it doesnt automatically switch for you.

ADSL is a point to point network protocol, what your trying would require a point to multipoint network. So it wont work.

Personally I'd return the netgear and buy a switch instead, and then wire a network cable down to your dads office. You could also use 'Homeplug' as an alternative way to get the network between his office and your.

You only need 1 router per ADSL line, but there is virually no limit on how complex the ethernet network behind the router is. I use gigabit lan, for fast file transfers to my PC, and my ADSL router just plugs into 1 port on the gigabit switch. Job sorted.
