Hi,

:D

Just done a basic build up of the first Socket A from a load of old components...

And it works!

Gigabyte GA-7VTXE, XP2200+, Geil RAM and a Ti4200

Got an Asus A7V333, XP1700+, some more RAM and a Ti200 and loads of hard disks and DVD/CD readers/writers about too.

I will build them so that one uses all the best components of course.

So once I've put the 2 machines together, what should I do with them. First and foremost are they worth anything? £50 maybe?

Folding maybe? Give them to charity?

:)

Aww... those take me back! :) Turn them into a cheap download box or maybe a file server for audio and video? CPU should easily be able to handle that!
Or, well, the Ti4200 is a decent card, why don't you sit down and replay Deus Ex on them for nostalgia's sake? ;)

I'm sort of in the same position.
Got a shuttle XPC with an XP2500+ in it and I'm unsure what to do with it.
It wont play HD rips and it takes 12 hours to encode them.
Its too small to turn into a file server (or is it?) I could at an absolute max fit 3 hard drives in it, but it only has 2 SATA ports.

get an esata card and a load of esata drives then it can be used as a file server :)

Download box is another good use, low power machine, schedule of when to download etc and just remote to it. Have it auto copy stuff when its completed to your storage drive/s.

I put my download box under the sub under my desk, then I have a heated and vibrating foot rest which has two different levels lol.

I think its shielded, but its been there for like 9 months and its still running fine. If the hdd's break itll just be an excuse to upgrade them to some sata ones :)

@Thejay: it's probably hugely overpowered for that kind of job! ;) My old XP2500-M has been relegated to being my dad's main desktop PC and it works just fine for him!:D I even use it to play old gems like Duke Nukem and Baldur's Gate when I visit home (and it's hugely overpowered for that too!)

I've still got a Socket A machine and a P4 laptop, they're just sitting there making my office look like an office for prospective buyers lol

I know problem is both parents now have laptops so the desktop does nothing it's an old XP2400 that I stuck my 3850AGP in but aside from that he wouldn't let me put the XP2800-M in, it's even got the thermalright SP-97 attached!

So the faster CPU / Board was put into the internet box instead......

Second Socket A works too...

Asus A7V333 :D

Moved by ghetto test bench from the carpet to the glass table lol.

Using the MSI Ti4200 again as I can't find my Ti200. :(

Thanks for the suggestion guys. NAS sounds good but what is a download box? I'm assuming it's something you boot up while you're away for it to download via a torrent client? The benefit being its low power consumption?

I have a Socket A, Althon XP 2600+ as a downloading rig primarily, also connected to the TV to watch films. Just popped it all in a new smallish case and worked a treat.

download box is purely for running downloads etc, meaning your main rig doesnt get affected. you set it up on schedule to do stuff when you wont mind it doing stuff and yes, the main benefit is its low power. You could also get it to power on at the right times via bios if you dont want to leave it on 24/7
