still looks magnificent

I like rollar coaster tycoon 1
railroad tycoon 3
theme hospital
and

monopoly -- not the board game rules ...the interactive one...its pretty cool building apartment blocks/charging rent/building bakeries etc...then in the 80s you can build dept. stores and roll money in. multiplayer up to 8 i think (each day = 10 years RT 12 mins or so starts in 1930 end in 2000 but some gameplay modes you can carry on 1.4 fixes the post 2000 crash wow im really tresting my memory now lol. )

Railroad Tycoon 2 was my favourite by a long way.

Building up your lines and services from one coast of the 19th-century USA to the other, while gentle atmospheric bluegrass music played in the background.

Lovely :)

RT3 just didn't have the same vibe, sadly.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe
(Now OpenTTD)

The single greatest game that there ever was.
Even has 64-bit versions, multiplayer, developer base, massive fan base, add on packs etc.
I have probably clocked up more hours on this game than even CS:S!

Agreed. I probably started playing when I was 8 or 9, it's the first game that I started to spend hours upon hours playing.

I spent my whole christmas time with my broher building the mother of all train networks!!! Love this game and what the fans have done to it is amazing with the development. You can't really call it modding when they re wrote the whole game and added every feature you ever need....

I also love Roller Coaster Tycoon, the original. (When you win all the people clap and leave go of their balloons)

I remember going round trying to pop as many as possible

Also drowning the b*****ds that were always sick on my paths and killing people with unfinished tracks.

Fun times! :D

I've just got Open TTD set up and had a crack last night. How in hells teeth am I meant to use one track for two trains? Is it a case of timing it right to the trains don't crash or what?

TTDLX (and it's open source successors) definitely. The official sequel, Locomotion, had great promise with all sorts of extra features such as narrow gauge, electrification and longer/double headed trains but was a bit of a fail in other areas.

RRT2/RRT3 were prettier but didn't have the "real" railway signalling that Transport Tycoon offered and I can't get RRT3 to work under Vista (haven't tested RRT2).

Sid Meier's Railroads was pretty meh, and I can't get get the hang of A Train 8 at all.

Away from transport/railways, the RCT series were classics in their time but not played for ages. Don't even know if RCT3 will run under Vista.

Unfortunately "Tycoon" went through a phase as a suffix for all sorts of cheap and nasty simplistic games (Mall, Golf, Ski etc.). Prison I keep meaning to look at but want to know which (if any) version allows you to build a Death Row.

For the more cerebral experience, might be worth tracking down Airline 6. This is an airline management sim, graphically not very pretty but allows you to set up and operate your own fleet of aircraft decide schedules and pricing etc. Last time I checked it wasn't particularly cheap and had to be ordered from Australia if you wanted the disc.
