Tycoon games

Not strictly "Tycoon" but if you're looking for something railway orientated and freeware to boot, I can recommend SimSig.

They have several simulations of Panel Boxes around the UK, some are based on the ARS style IECC so tend to run themselves but some of the newer ones use the IECC interface to drive NX style panels thus giving you plenty to do. My favourite oversight is wondering why a train isn't moving with the route set then realising I haven't lowered the level crossing barriers to be able to clear the signal!

working out how to setup tracks and signals effectively is the most fun part of openttd for me, trying to get 20+ trains through a 5 platform station with minimal wait time is just an awesome challenge :D
 
I find playing massive maps makes this easier.
I always start with Coal. I can run dozens of trains through a single 7 platform stations. The challenge is doing it well :D.
 
I also miss the old days of tycoon games. Back then they often had a certain sense of humour that you don't really get any more. Would love an updated Theme Hospital!
 
I love roller coaster tycoon 3 and soaked. Also really want Zoo Tycoon 2: Ultimate Collection but im not payin 18 quid for it.
 
All the old tycoon games are great for reasons no one seems to be able to replicate with a new game. RCT3 was probably the best attempt at making a "new" tycoon game in recent years, and it's still nowhere near as fun as the previous ones. Locomotion is just unable to beat transport tycoon and what was the other recentish one, hospital tycoon? never actually played that, but don't think anything published by anyone I've heard of (except steam or something like that) will be able to capture all the little things that made these games great
 
ahhhhh, i now rly wanna play rct2!!! i spend hours on that with ulimited money and just messing about with coasters! i feel like searching for it in the endless boxs of games ive got under my pc!

I know it wasnt a tycoon game, but I found myself playin Theme Hospital t'other day! My graphics card looked at it like it was a piece of c*&p but it was brillaint! RIP Bullfrog!
 
Yeah Theme Hospital was great, the comedy in it was brilliant too. I wonder if I still have the original massive box that it came in somewhere...
