Right im a noob on the this networking stuff guys :(

My dad's recently upgraded are orange boardband package to the max with free VoIP calls which sound great but isn't.

First orange sent there "Orange Livebox" which you have to use for the free VoIP calls but the problem is we have a Netgear DG834Gv2 already set up and working nice :)
Now i've got the livebox working but the wireless signal isn't very good and there's only two etherent ports on the livebox.

I spend all day yesterday playing around with both and atm i have the livebox as a gateway/modem i believe and the netgear as the main router which the livebox is feeding the internet to the netgear and the both are connected by a ethernet cable.

Which at first seem to work great but when using the wireless from down stairs its very slow

So im thinking could it be the ethernet cable which is connecting the twogether be slowing the speed down.

What the best type of cable to use ?
Cat 5 , Cat5e, Cat6
UTP or STP or cross over ?

I turned the wireless off on the livebox to use the wireless on the netgear +
and i turned DHCP off on the netgear.

yes i did see DMZ in livebox's setting.

yes i guess so there both routers

From searching online i did find this from a fourm:

"Its working , Been up for a good few hours now and several reboots . For anyone interested this is how its set up .

Livebox on its default 192.168.1.1

Netgear on 192.168.1.2

PC1 on 192.168.1.3

PC2 on 192.168.1.4

PC3 on 192.168.1.5

All 3 pcs are set on manual IP's with a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 and the dns also on 192.168.1.1 .

Livebox has a dmz set to 192.168.1.2 .

No special config done to the netgear a dg834 .

This is all working peachy as far as I can tell . Just need Orange to activate talk service now lol "

true but if the phone line goes into the livebox then change the settings and that, and turn off the wireless and connect the netgear to the livebox and the netgear should be able to be the act as the main router ?

Ok guys atm im thinking ditching the negear and just use the livebox and im thinking of buying: Wireless access point + 8 port switch
That should work ok with the livebox shouldn't it ?

Also what the best cable Cat5e or Cat6 guys ?
