Hey guys

Need some new tyres on the M3 rears....but I'm a bit confuddled.

KwikFit (not that I'd go there) are suggesting the Mich PS2s:

Whereas Event Tyres come up with the following options:

I think I want the PS2s XL, however are there any opinions on the Pilot Super Sports?

Thanks.

I do beleive the Super Sports are the spiritual successor to the PS2, the PS3 sits below the super sports.

Not quite right.

The PS3 does not supercede the PS2, the PS3 replaces the PE2.

PS2 was still their flagship performance tyres, especially in the dry.

The SuperSports is the sucessor to the PS2, its superior in every aspect and also has tremendous wet traction and reduces ride noise and has a 300 AA treadwear rating so last longer.

The SuperSports is far superior to the CS3 and PS2, buy the SuperSports, you have an M3 put it the best boots on you can afford. :)

What load rating is your current rear tyres?

Get same load rating and ensure it is XL for use on an M3.

Haven't a clue, and it's raining :p

Will double check. I assume a higher load rating is OK? I.e. Replace 94Y with 98Y?

PS2's are absolutely ancient, if you must buy Michelin's go for the Pilot Super Sport instead.

So what?

Still one of the best performance tyres (dry), especially for high performance orientated cars.

Having driven CSL, 911 on PS2's and other tyres, the PS2 is the tyre of choice, well until the SuperSport came along anyway, but until its release the PS2 for many was still the best performance option, even though its been around for years. :)

Probably. It's only a bit more than a tank full difference after all.

I'll get the better ones if I can find the things in stock. Wouldn't be heart-broken at the PS2s though. I mean they're a great tyre - just cos something new is out doesn't make them rubbish all of a sudden.

For an E46 M3, Super Sports are about the best road going tyre money can buy at the moment. PS2's a close 2nd.

However, unless there's a specific reason you can't, for an upsized rear size like that I'd stongly suggest you consider the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's. You'll be able to buy a full set of tyres for the price of two PS2/Super Sports rears.

They are 95% as good as the Mich's but 50% of the price (for upsized). They work very well on the M3, in all conditions. I used to but only Mich's for the M3, now I've had the Vreds, I'd go for them everytime now.

EDIT: not sure if you have an E46 or E9X. My comments/opinions apply to the E46.

Be surprised if either of those places have the super sports in stock, theyre very difficult to get hold of at the moment.

It's an E92. Interesting idea though, not seen those tyres offered anywhere though.

Hi there

The Vredstein Ultrac Sessenta is a very good tyre, but having had them on an M3 CSL they did not have anywhere near the dry ability of the PS2, though wet grip was superior I found them rather lacking in feedback which made the drive quite dull in comparison to the car on PS2's.

Its not always about the performance but more about the feedback/confidence a tyre gives and this is something that Michelin and Yokohama seem to have got spot on. :)
