Tyre prices

i have just noticed this aswell, price has gone up 50% on goodyear eagle f1 GSD3s (205/50 R16 ). They were about £65-£70 a corner a year ago, now they are £105 plus. absolute joke, makes you think should have bought a whole load when they were that cheap!!

Left me in a bit of a pickle as i really like them and tread is running low on the front tyres. :(

I dont think they were - I was buying that size for my Mondeo years and years ago and even back then they were never as cheap as £65 a corner. I think I was paying closer to £90!

Just checked my emails and in 2009 managed to get a pair of these from camskill for £140 - so about £80 fitted per corner. Must have got lucky at these prices as you paid more! Cant find my invoice for the the fronts i changed last year...

Still though its gone up loads compared to what i paid for them :(

Had to replace a rear on the Corsa a few weeks ago after noticing a bulge in sidewall.

Went to one of the smaller chains (Malvern Tyres) and asked for a budget tyre and they fitted a Mohawk, £60 all in. However that's only £10 cheaper than the £70 per corner the Vauxhall main dealer charged for Firestones when the front pair failed the MOT in March.

Almost wish I'd gone back to Vauxhall for it now, I don't think Mohawk are too bad (budget Yokohama) but kicking myself if for £10 more could have had another Firestone.

Bit of a tangent to moaning about prices, but why aren't any sports tyres available in non lowprofile sizes anymore? Usually I go a bit further to get some tyres as there's a place near my parents' that's good and cheap, but rang the local tyre place as I realised on the back from picking it up that it turns out the fronts on my new car aren't just due replacing but downright dangerous and I don't fancy a 30 minute drive on them.

I ask what they have, they say brand and price. I go, ok... which models? Thinking I'm about to get a nice deal on some Bridgestones. Turns out they're all the touring comfort rubbish.

So the question becomes - better to get a mid-range brand sport option or a premium-brand less sporty option?

Why do people let tyre shops choose what to fit? I mean seriously, a mohawk? I bet it doesn't even match the other side.

Correct. Other side (and the faulty one replaced) is a Dunlop as originally fitted, still got about 5mm tread left.

Sure I read somewhere Mohawks aren't too bad, what have you heard? The car is just a bog standard 1.2 for hacking round town or occasional longer drives and driving/cornering at legal/sensible speeds.

Not the worst tyre purchase I've made, for sure. Years ago when money was tight I quite often put remoulds on the rears, now I have heard some scary stories about those and definitely false economy (shot in 8000 miles).

Mohawk are just another cheapo budget tyre make. It matters not who they are really made by - they are just cheap tyres. But its pointless buying them becuase you can buy proper tyres for not much more!

About 6 months ago I had 2 tyres put onto the front of my girlfriends Corsa. It might even have been Malvern Tyres who did it actually - it was near Great Malvern town centre. I chose the tyre and told them what I expected to pay for them and the result was Continental EcoContact 3's for £54 each fitted I think it was.

NEVER let a tyre company choose for you. It tells them you don't know what you are doing and means they can flog you the worst tyre they have at the highest margin they can get away with :p

The new tyre has been on there about 7 weeks now and I haven't noticed any adverse handling but then as I said I drive fairly steady (probably the only person not looking forward to 80 MPH on the Mways). So what is the possible outcome of two different brands on the rear? I know years ago the rule was not to mix radial and cross ply on the same axle, but they are all radials today.

In order to match, I will probably end up having to replace the other Dunlop with a Mohawk when it wears out, as unless the Mohawk wears faster than the Dunlop the car is now always going to have either new/part-worn or part-worn/shot on the rears.

Just managed to pick up some Eagle F1 GSD3's for £77 each, think i got lucky with that. Fingers crossed they arrive sometime next week! (Phew!)
