Tyre wear question

On the 21st January 2013 I purchased 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 92Y (225/40YR18) tyres for my 2004 Ford Mondeo TDCI Ghia-X Estate. The mileage at the time of fitting was 142,585, my current mileage is 154,005...so I have done 11,420 miles since January and the front two tyres need replacing already.

The wear is even across the entire width of both front tyres.

Now I'm not exactly driving a high performance sports car, neither am I doing track days in it. I don't think that I've ever locked up under braking and very rarely spin up the front wheels. The tyre pressures are checked on a regular basis and are kept at Ford's recommened pressures. Most of those 11k miles have been on A & B Roads with the odd trip up and down the motorway.

So my question is, is this normal wear for these tyres...what sort of mileage should I be seeing from these tyres? I know that they are classed as a high performance tyre and as such you sacrifice tyre wear for performance etc..but to need replacing after only 11k miles on a Mondeo estate!?

So if this is normal wear for these tyres, what tyres would you recommend that offer similar levels of performance but last a lot longer than 11k miles.

Performance tyres are generally softer which is why you get better traction, downside is they wear quicker. I would say the mileage you got out of them is about right.

An old workmate had exactly the same car with the same size tyres and he also complained that his fronts wouldn't last long at all. He did some research into it and found it was a pretty common occurrence on that car. He tried several different brands and they were all the same.

Well that suck's if that's the case :(

I found my 2008 diesel Mondeo used to eat front tyres. I didn't exactly drive super carefully, but neither did I hoon it around, and I used to get approx. 10K miles out of a set of front tyres (normally had conti sport 2s or 3s on it).

By comparison my current car, a 320d estate, achieves in excess of 30K miles for a front set, and my driving style is no different.

Surely as one car is FWD and the other RWD it's not exactly a fair/direct comparison??

Really?

I have exactly the same tyres on my Z4 (35i) and I'm about to replace the rears after 20,000 miles.

Like alx said, it's not a fair comparison, plus your Z4 probably has wider rears than 225. Put it this way, I had falken 452's (225/40/18) on my mk4 golf TDI and I got about 14k miles out of them and they're a slightly harder compound than the OP's tyres.

So given that the current tyres aren't lasting long enough for my liking, what are people's tyre recommendations? On a side note, is it just me or when looking at tyres online there are no wear level indicators anymore? It's just wet weather performance, fuel economy and noise ratings! :( Having just checked, my Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2's have a treadwear rating of 300. So surely to get more miles out of the tyres I need to be looking for a higher treadwear rating?

What are the Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance tyres like for example?

Im not entirely au fait with tyre wear as ive not got a huge amount of experience but my bridgestone turanza ER300s lasted 30000 miles with a rotation in the middle, pretty happy with them.

Hawker

Just got off the phone to Goodyear UK, and the Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance has a treadwear rating of 340 in comparison to the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 treadwear rating of 300.

So you'll get 40 more treadwears from them? Nice!

Also, with regard to my previous post I wasn't using the Mondeo vs BMW as a "fair" comparison, just anecdotal experience. I saw similar treadwear on my Mondeo as the OP, and can only conclude that it's not down to driving style but simply because the Mondeo is a fairly heavy, front wheel drive car with quite wide tyres.

The whole "diesel engines reduce the life of front tyres" just hadn't dawned on me until I started reading threads in other forums.
I was posting about just how long my tyres were lasting and others were saying they had totally worn them down in half the miles I'd run.
Connection - those with fast wear rates were all in diesel's.

I suppose it makes sense when you just think about it. Does add to the yearly cost of running a diesel over the petrol equivalent I guess.

I don't think it helps that the vast majority of my driving is on A/B Roads either. If it was all mainly motorway miles I would expect to get more than 11k out of a set of tyres.

I would say around 11,000 miles is about right. It's a heavy fwd car. You can't compare tyre wear of a rwd drive and a fwd as they use tyres very differently.

I wonder if turbo'd engines (so basically all diesels) have a higher wear rate due to dumping a load of torque through the wheels rather than the more linear progression of n/a engines?

I've killed a pair of Conti Sport Contact 2 front tyres on a Mondeo TDCI in less then 10K, so 11K is not disastrous.

I got 18k out of a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3. Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas wore reasonably well for me too - about 15k.

Keep the fronts at 40PSI.
