Tyres cracked

They will... I had worse and seen worse.
Yup, not even close to being a fail.

This however will fail (and I did fail it)..

modern Michelin tyres crack really soon, i've got some which are about 4.5 years old and look like they're from the 1970's, no idea what they've done to their compounds over the last few years but im never buying them again.

Happens with a few brands in recent years :( my Bridgestones get crazy cracking between the tread blocks after 2-3 years which in the past wouldn't happen until tyres were 7-10 years old depending on usage conditions.

Most tyres now seem to last a year tops before this happens now.

Had both cars require new tyres not long after having had them replaced.

Annoying, but like most stuff nowadays seems to be they are built with short lifespans...

I'm told it happens when the silica content in the tyres starts to dry up, but modern tyres have less of it due to EU regs, so they dry up quicker (another false economy created by them). But it also happens faster still if you don't use them much.

I've seen budget tyres starts to crack after only 3 months of light use!

I've noticed it with shoes too, the sole feels less rubbery and now more plastic/foam

Yep especially Chinese made ones. I noticed I get a LOT of static shocks while wearing modern trainers too for some reason. Probably related to the materials :/

You can still find UK made shoes (e.g. hotter), the difference in quality is massive.
