New boots time for my E39 SE. I have plenty of tread left in the tires that came on my car, but they are awful tyres. I think they are the cause of handling woes.

I have narrowed my choices to

Goodyear F1 GD3
Goodyear F1 Asymmetric (GD3 successor)
Falken 452
Toyo Proxes T1

My criteria:

-Handling & grip
-Comfort
-noise

I do low milage, so wear is not an issue. I have done a search but not found a comparison of the F1 v Toyo

Any thoughts appreciated

has dunlop sp9000 on the E39. comfort and noise werent really on my priority list. for grip the eagle GSD3's were noticably better.

i had toyos T1r and eagles on the 200sx as well and in the dry there wasnt a lot in them, but wet the eagles were better.

:)

Not heard a lot of good things about the Cont or the Dunlop - not a lot bad either . If I go for the F1 it will probably by the latest asymmetric model

That would be my choice too. Although ive yet to see or hear any reviews of them. Goodyear themselves rate them better than the GSD3 for dry grip and noise.

You've picked 4 really good tyres there - and I doubt that you'll be disappointed any of them.

a lot of people swear by the Toyos and Falkens but then you'll find people saying that they preferred the F1s having previous owned the Toyos, Falkens etc, and vice versa.

It's all a subjective when it comes to peoples' opinions on tyres but have a look here:-

Why not the Contis that iirc it came with from the factory?

They came with rubbish Dunlop SP Sport 2000E's from the factory, at least my Sport did.

Amongst 5 Series owners the general concencous is that F1 GS-D3 is the tyre of choice for the E39 although this is an opinion formed before the new version which I know little about.

I had Dunlop SP Sport 9000's on my Mondeo when I got it and I replaced them with F1's. The F1's were quieter and gripped better in the wet, but the SP Sport 9000's were by no means bad.

The 2000E's on my 530i when I got it were terrible, though.

Put Mitchellin Pilot Sport's on mine, nice grip on them, perfer them over the Continental ContiSports it had before. Seem to be a lot quieter than the Conti's too.

I replaced my old Potenza 255/45/18's on the rear of my e38 with Falken 452's and my verdict is cheap , grippy (although I notice a few more "TC winks" with them over the Bridgestones ) but not so great on durability.

They both will require changing within 1000 miles, which will mean an approximate life of 9000 miles compared to the 13,000miles I got from the Bridgestones!

And to think I thought 13k was bad! :o

The e38 7 is bigger & heavier than the e39 and has a reputation for eating tyres which seems well proven(!) I'd imaging the e39 to be considerably better.

My old mans e39 528i has covered 60k on a set of Michelin Pilots, which is damn good imo, although I know I drive a lot harder than my Dad does.

I am increasingly leaning towards the new F1 (asymmetric), shame they dont come in 255/40 profile. I would have been tempted to get the sports setup for the rears

Tbh, I don't think Pilots come in a sports profile (which my dads 528i isn't) I could'nt find Pilots to fit the 18's on my 7 Series, sadly.

HI there

As were talking tyres here what take/experience do people have on the Pirelli Pzero ROSSO tyres? Any good?

Its what I have on the Mustang as they seem a fine all round tyre but obviously its the only tyre I've experienced on the car so don't know how good they really are.

I was gonna put Michelin Pilot Sport 2 all round or Dunlop Sport Maxx but when I found they were hard to get hold off, as in out of stock at most places I've just decided to change the rears out and stick with the stock tyre Saleen go with.

Not my personal experience but my friend has these on his RS6 and they seem excellent. He certainly gives them plenty of stick and theres been no complaints so far.

I found them pretty rubbish to be honest when the A3 came with them. My T4(with Eagle F1s) had much more grip and each tyre was 20mm narrower(and its not the best suspension setup). Changed them off the A3 at 4k miles and replaced them with F1s, the improvement was immense in both wet and dry.

Just a general question, are you not limited in choice for tyres gibbo with 20" wheel sizes and low profile tyres not nothing you see everyday in the UK. I dare to think how much they are each.

As for the recommendation i've heard good things about Yokohoma Prada Spec 2's.
