I’m I mad Buying a TZ5 Digital camera and setting it only to say 5Meg?

Took a load of pictures today on Max settings 9M saving as roughly 4mb on the card. But there huge and all I do is size them 40%....

Do you lose a lot of detail setting it back to 5M, I’m I still getting a great picture from My Lumix?

I do intend to get a few prints enlarged to canvas once I get them edited.

Cheers,
Stew.

dont bother, leave it on 9m and resize down as you need. You cannot regain the detail from a small file but you can make a large file smaller, especially as you are wanting to be able to print large from them!

Media is dirt cheap nowadays, can get an 8gb ultra 2 sdhc for £25 from the highstreet these days, nevermind online!

The camera is going on loan to Australia for three weeks with my Sister and I thought if I shift it down to 5M it might save on battery recharge if taking 9M pic takes more power……..daft thought probably and thought with less detail like 5M it might Auto focus quicker for her…….

Got two lithium batteries one the original and bought a spare with 8GB SDHC card even got a usb stick for it for £1 that works a treat………..

thanks for your thoughts ....

Just FYI, I did the same thing when on holiday a couple of years ago. I was only planning on printing off at 7x5 and wasn't planning on cropping anything to any large degree. Got me a couple more hundred photos than I would have done otherwise :).

I'm not sure about the power thing - I guess it would save a bit of power but don't know to what extent. Might be an interesting experiment ;)

Couldn't agree more. There's no real justification for shooting at anything less than the camera's maximum resolution and quality.

Just get bigger cards. They are dirt cheap.

If you take your photos at 5mp and get a stunning shot you'd like to print large, you are going to kick yourself.

Silly other question

I thought 9MP pics would be 9MB in size rather than 3-5mb……….this just the norm?

9 megapixels means 9 million pixels. It specifies the resolution of the image, not the size of the file. A pixel is not a byte, especially after jpeg compression.

Yeah figured it was something like that, Thanks everyone for the info, I’m keeping it on 9MP as it’s a 8GB card anyway………god knows I think it says 1700 pictures left on it………big difference from my old Sony with 128 Mb…..that took around 50 ish.
