Uber to lose licence to operate in London

So Uber's defence/admission in the end was basically "Yep, it's a fair cop, we are a **** company but we promise to get better"

Ok fair enough, you've got 15 months to prove it

I think its more "we've changed since then and now meet the criteria fully (even though if they didn't was a very blurry issue) and are willing to take a short price we to prove that"

As it's not a criminal court case but a review on if they meet current criteria you can't really punish them for past action

Yep, and that's fair enough. I think the Judge was quite strict in her summing up and restricted the licence to 15 months rather than the 5 years being asked for as a way to just check they will/are living up to their promises.

Once every 11 days? Interesting way to phrase it (an angle there perhaps). That equates to 33 per year and thats supposedly with poor standards of checking by uber. This pales in comparison to sexual assaults on buses for example. (https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/bus-crime-statistics)

There are around 45,000 Uber drivers in London. If they do lets say a conservative 20 fares per week, that is 900,000 journeys per year.

I'll let you work out the real risk rate.

Next you'll be telling us not to use planes because on average a small number of people die flying every year.

Angle? What angle, I was just reiterating what it said in this piece from The Independent.
F.O.I. obtained by The Sun, reveal 32 assault claims made against employees of Uber over the past 12 months, equal to one every 11 days.
Sure, as someone who drove a Black Cab in London for just shy of 30 years, I HAD an interest in Uber’s activities, but I returned my identifiers, and my two TFL London Cab Driver licences in 2012.
Unlike the serfs who drive for Uber, I had no interest in working long hours for peanuts.
In the 29 years and 10 months that I wore that green tin badge around my neck, no one had the need to fear or report me, although in my early days, when I was in my late twenties, on a couple of occasions I instigated a friendly, non threatening conversation, that once or twice led to a dinner date.
In fact, this harmless scheme was going like gangbusters, until the fateful evening that I picked up a very attractive redhead in Museum St. WC1, and took her to Raymouth Rd. SE16.
I was well and truly struck by “un coup de foudre”, and that was me out of the game.

Good, uber is a life saver in London. Black cabs are an absolute rip off in comparison.

You can label anything a rip off if you think that you can get something just as good for less.
I just looked at two weeks in July, flying from London to Tampa FL, a 4 bedroomed pool home with full a/c in Spring Hill, (NOT ORLANDO), £900 for two weeks, plus £780 each for direct flights, and a full size rental car for £450, making it £2910 for two people.
You can also get two weeks A.I. in Majorca, same dates, for £1720 for two, not including a car.
Some would say that the Florida deal is a rip off, but I know which one I’d go for, and you might take 8 to the Florida 4 bedroom one, still £900 for two weeks, but cheaper individually with 8 chipping in, although you might then want two cars.

What a ridiculous comparison :D

You've compared two completely different things with obviously a large difference in cost. If you want a holiday to Florida, then a Holiday to Majorca isn't appropriate is it?

Uber and Black cabs are both providing an identical service which is getting a customer from A to B

Except one is significantly cheaper and easier/quicker to acquire than the other.

The fact a black cabbie actually knows where he's going is irrelevant to the customer when an uber driver will still get you to your destination using the sat nav. All your training which I acknowledge is hard work and expensive again is irrelevant to the customer, they will still go for the option that get's them to their destination for less money.

Black cabbies are stuck in their old fashioned ways and need to significantly drop their prices to compete with the modern market.

[...]

Really? According to a Freedom of Information reply, the Met Police reckon that between February 2015 and February 2016, Uber drivers were accused of sexually assaulting passengers, once every 11 days in London.
Wonder if any of those men/women see them as a Godsend?

There are over 1 million Uber rides per day in London, so 1 sexual assault per 11 million rides is something to worry about?

Plus all the rides are GPS tracked, Uber know what driver has accepted your ride and has all of their details. More traceable than a random black cab, so I know who I'd rather be sexually assaulted by.

Next time you go out for a drink, tell a random bloke at the bar that you're quite happy to be sexually assaulted as long as they show you some id.

Vous etes un raconteur.

Uber need to be taken to task on how they vet and treat drivers for sure. Every driver I've had personally has been exemplary though.

Won't matter when driverless Uber cars are a thing though. Even the black cabbie will be done for

I understand the problems with Uber and why traditional taxis have issues with them. However the service is simply better with uber. Majority of the time it is cheaper, drivers are much nicer and the cars (where I live anyway) are always much better as well.

Quand vous dîtes raconteur, j'espère que vous voulez dire comme Dickens, pas Baron Munchausen.

I suppose what I mean is that I can imagine that you're good at a dinner party, for telling a good story. When I read the majority of your posts around this forum smooth jazz starts playing softly in the background, I sit back in my imaginary leather wingback, gently swirl my whisky around its glass and spark up a cigar.

Please, take it as the compliment it's intended to be. I am being friendly (and non-threatening).

(Et, bon, quand-meme un peu bête aussi :p)
