All,

Corporate laptop has just blown up and they cant re-image.

How can I retrieve HDD data quickly?

Take the hard drive out and use a laptop to IDE convertor.
Then put the hard drive in a normal PC as a second drive to copy/save the data you want.

They are all over a certain online auction site or maybe a local computer store may have one in stock.

what exactly do you mean by "blown up"?

i.e. what exactly went wrong with it and what (if anything) still works.

could you boot it with something like a knoppix boot disk, get to the drive with captiveNTFS and share the files with Samba, and then pull the data over the network?

or is it a little more borked in the hardware dept than that?

The otherway is to boot from a windows 2000 CD to the recovery console. You should be able to do a net use to connect to a network share and copy the data off. You may even be able to copy to a usb drive.

Easiest way is with one of those laptop IDE convertors though.

I think he means that it wont even power on any more, so removing the disk and hooking it to another laptop/PC is the only way.

either way he is suspended due to his signature being a little offensive
