Was thinking of getting me a dedicated Wifi router so i can put the Superhub into modem mode.

Ive heard good things about Ubiquiti, and that they make super good hardware..but im confused by their products, is the "Access point" basically a Wifi router in itself or purely just an "extender" ?

What Ubiquiti product would i need purely as a Wifi Router?

appreciate the replies in advance :)

If you think about a wireless router, an Access Point is the wireless bit. So it doesn't do any routing, it's just the wireless bit - the thing that let's devices conenct to a network wirelessly. Try to forgot about extenders, they're fairly awful pieces of kit.

As @john_smith said, a Dream Machine will do what you want. That's the router, switch and wireless access point in a single unit.[/QUOTE]

Use the VM router, turn off the WiFi and use a Ubiquiti access point?

The main advantage of using a separate access point is that you can centrally locate it away from where the internet comes in for much better coverage.

Appreciate the replies folks, only just noticed there's an official ubiquiti thread sorry mods.
I'm just looking for a wireless router that is better at handling multiple wireless devices connected at the same time but does not cause any slowdowns on my hard wired pc, but also I'd love to have a router that has some form or a way of doing extensive add blocking because they absolutely drive me up the wall.

That’s two different jobs, typically done on two different devices.

For ad blocking you’ll want to route your internet traffic through something like pihole which can be set up on a raspberry pi (hence the name).

No fit for purpose router should cause slowdowns when multiple wireless devices are added. Some are better than others when it comes to prioritising traffic (QOS) but your always going to get slowdowns somewhere if your saturating the bandwidth available.

Are you actually having problems with the provided equipment? If so what are they?

The answers are all in this thread and mash them together to suit your needs.

  • Use the superhub to be the modem/router
  • Add an Access point to do the wifi in the best spot in the house (@b0rn2sk8 )
  • Get a pi or if you have a VM/Cluster run an instance of pihole (@b0rn2sk8 )
  • Want to have that all-in-one? Dream machine (@john_smith )
  • mitigate the adds by subscribing to platforms like youtube (use VPN from India)

The last post you updated sounds like you just need to do the first three bullets above.
