Ubisoft at it again, 93-95% of PC Gamers are pirates.

Its obviously an issue with pc gamers, but Ubisoft are well within their rights to try and protect their games, we do all know though that games are pirated no matter what protection is put on them.

It's like trying to protect yourself from an RPG by wearing a bullet proof vest, it's pointless. Without any DRM they'd probably still have a similar number of people pirate their game but likely more people buying their game. They have nothing to lose by scraping their DRM in my opinion and to continue using it will only hurt them even more.

Dear Ubisoft..

I have never pirated an ubisoft game in my life. I'll probably never by an ubisoft game again in my life because...

I will not buy a single player game that crashes because your always on authentication server has gone south.

You call me a pirate which makes me more determined never to buy one of your games ever again.

A fair few of your games are simply overpriced, buggy ****

So Ubisoft, I'm not pirating your games (or anyone else's for that matter). I'm just not going to buy or play them. Publishers that don't treat me like **** can have my money. You can't.

And how do you have a statistic that is '93% to 95%' anyway? Surely if they actually had evidence to support that statement it would be an exact value?

Well 93-95%* of all forumites disagree with his statement so it couldn't be that accurate.

the last UBI game i bought was settlers 7, the game was ok but i was ****ed that i couldn't take the game with me to the caravan :( in the end i was forced to get a crack for something that i actually paid money for, there's logic for you! UBI need to wake up and see it is hurting them more having this DRM than not having it.

If 93-95% of PC gamers are pirates, then how does EA's financials show that PC sales were bigger than PS3 this year and the fastest growing platform, for them?

Also tell that to Activision Blizzard who scrape in billions a year from PC gamers.

They arent pulling the wool over any of our eyes.

The last Ubisoft game I played was Rayman Origins. Yes it was on PS3 but it is available on PC too. It is a brilliant game and I paid £20 for it shortly after it came out. Bargain!
I pirate PC games and don't care what others think. I do buy a large proportion of my games and if pirating was fully stopped I would buy exactly the same number of games each year.

I buy games, probably too many really including ANNO 2070 which I played for like 10 minutes before uninstalling. Anyway even though I do buy games, especially ones I want multiplayer for, I have also downloaded games that ive gone on to play and not purchase/ games that I didnt like and uninstalled.

That makes me a pirate, although I do spend a fair chunk on PC games each year. I would assume (quite correctly) that at least 75% of PC gamers on these boards have downloaded a PC game to either try it or keep it..... and even if you then buy that game or other games, you are still a pirate as you are aquiring it without paying originally.

Id say a way around it is to release the full game as a free download... and then have the game stop and force you to enter a purchased key. OOTP has something similar, you get like 6 months full game iirc and then it will stop (6 months of the season that means) and to progress or start a new season you have to have a key.

Why dont more companies do that, do it via Steam so you have that additional protection, but release it free... you will get 'x' more people downloading it anyway to try it and then if they want to play it fully, they will then purchase.

It cant be cost effective to do that, but it seems like an easy way to appease customers whilst also accessing more customers and then offering a simple purchase route should the game be good. Quality would then be expected on release and I think everyone would benefit.

1.Go to any torrent site.
2 Type [PS3] and [xbox360] into the search engine.
3. See hundreds of thousands of people pirating console games.
4. Never buy anything off ubisoft ever again.:D
5. Hope they go bust, and their few talented developers get jobs elsewhere.

I had some issues when I first bought Anno 1404 with the DRM as it took several goes to get it registered and then I was informed that I had used up all my attempts to register. It took a while before I could play that again. After a patch or two they removed the DRM which was convenient but I imagine the uptake of pirated copies increased.

When I bought Anno 2070 I've yet to have a major issue with it. There was a couple of times when I tried to play and the servers were down but in the main it has been faultless. I have been concerned about it being ok when I changed to my Z77 / IB setup but it has been fine. As the DRM is still in place for this title I would imagine that the number of players (for the latest patched version) represent those who actually paid for the game and, for me, I've not found the DRM to be an issue, although I have worried that it would be.

In fact I have just installed Anno 2070 again and I needed to visit the Solidshield website to enter my serial number in and then download a keyfile. Once done the game showed that it activated fine.

UBI games for me have been fine and I have had very little issues with the DRM and it would certainly not put me off from buying another game based on that protection.

I tend to have more issues with GFWL than I have had with any UBI game.

It is a nonsense statement.

I know I am in the minority here but I enjoy several franchises developed by Ubi. I'm looking forward to Far Cry 3, and Assassins's Creed 3 this year.

The DRM is a pain, but I really don't see the point in all the paper waving in the air, and boycotting games due to a "principle". If I enjoy the game I will play it.

Ditto, I still buy the games even if they have ridiculous DRM. The DRM on the latest Assassins Creed wasn't as intrusive IIRC but I guess Ubisofts reputation is now ruined with PC gamers.

I didn't buy AC2 when it was released as I just didn't have the facilities(constant internet) to play it at the time, so I picked it up about 3 months later for a cheaper price.

Bingo. Might be in the minority, but certainly not alone. Anno, AC, Rayman, PoP. All great franchises I wouldn't miss because of some stupid boycott.

And yet last year...

Ubisoft's controversial "Always-On" DRM scheme has been dubbed "a success" by an Ubisoft representative.

The rep, talking to PC Gamer, went on to say that Ubisoft has seen "a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection.
