Ubisoft to remove games from Steam (only 2 now as not to alarm!)

Me too. This isn't nice. In principle it's just wrong, and this will set a precedent moving forward.

As with these big companies, it's all about what they can get away with.

I assume you can't register them on the Uplay client to continue access?

Personally I never buy a game again from publishers/developers who pull stunts like that and so should any self-respecting person.

EDIT: According to Ubi's statement the offline portions of the games are still playable but still.

I believe this is linked to Ubisoft shutting down the servers for a bunch of their games.
We can probably expect the full list of games to be removed from Steam to be:
  • Anno 2070
  • Assassin’s Creed 2
  • Assassin’s Creed 3
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
  • Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD
  • Assassin’s Creed Revelations
  • Driver San Francisco
  • Far Cry 3
  • Ghost Recon Future Soldier
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
  • Rayman Legends
  • Silent Hunter 5
  • Space Junkies (as a multiplayer-only VR game, this will be completely unplayable)
  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist
  • ZombiU
Those are the current games having their servers shut down.

So why remove them from steam (not directly aimed at you)

They're being delisted so you can't buy them. No point in enabling people to buy products with content that is no longer playable. But if you already own them, they'll still be there minus the multiplayer DLC. (For the Assassin's Creed games anyway.)

So you'd have to install them directly from uplay then? If it's still OK for them if people own them, it doesn't seem too bad.

My delisted games have remained in my inventory and I can re-download them any time (these aren't Ubisoft games). The only part that doesn't work is the link to visit the specific game store page, so it takes you Steam main store page instead.
