Hi, When I viewed Ubuntu 11.04 from a live CD, I got icons on the left hand side of my screen. When I installed Ubuntu in VirtualBox version 4, I got no icons. Any body have any ideas on how to get those icons back.:D

something like this,

Ok best guess

That picture is the Unity desktop which requires graphics acceleration.

My guess is you have an intel graphics chip in your computer that was recognised by the live CD, the Virtual box one is probably seeing a 2D graphics card so you have got plain old Gnome 2.

I haven't used virtual box in a long time but I understand it now supports 3D effects, you probably have to tweak a setting in virtual box to allow it to work. Otherwise a native install is the way to go.

Edit: just noticed you have ATi card, still same theory applies.

I give that a go, but here,

I have set it to 3D, with no effect,

I just googled it, you need to install Virtual Box Guest additions.

go to the control centre and open Synaptic Package manager, search and install this:

virtualbox-ose-guest-utils

then restart. It should now work

Thanks Phil, reinstalled and then made the changes, and it works.:D

Great.

Now that you have it, the question is will you keep it? I really thought I would hate Unity and would stick with Gnome/Classic but I tried it and am using pretty much full time now.
