Anyone upgrading to 11.10 today? The Countdown Clock!!

The Changes
The classic menu has been scrapped and now users can login with either the Unity 2D or 3D desktop. You can also get Gnome 3 from Ubuntu repositories as an additional desktop environment. With the cog icon on login screen, select Unity 2D or Unity 3D as your desktop environment. To install Gnome 3, you can simply use the following command: sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

New Look Software Center
Ported to GTK 3 with a much nicer interface.

Nautilus 3
Tabbed interface with the option to use multiple tabs for opening multiple directories within the same window.

Appearance Settings
Ambiance and Radiance themes have also been ported to GTK3, a more simplified method of switching between themes.

New Dash Button
Dash button has been moved down to look more integrated with the Unity Launcher.

Unity Dash and Lens
Now comes with its own Window Controls which has made it easier to sort applications, files and folders. You can use the File, Music and Application lens with a more advanced filter which allows to perform search according to ratings of applications and other items.

Power Menu
Now includes monitor, Bluetooth devices, start up applications, printers, USB devices, and system updates.

Alt+Tab preview
Alt+Tab preview now has a more Mac OS X like look.

Software Changes
Mozilla Thunderbird 7 replaces Evolution.
Deja Dup Backup.
Libre Office 3.4.

The new overlay scroll bar which is coming to 12.04 can be tested in 11.10 by adding ppa:ayatana-scrollbar-team/release to the software sources. You can watch a video of the improvements to the bar here.

Cant think of much else...

But post your comments and what ever you think of it. I didn't get a chance to check out the Beta releases so il give the full release a go later.

Hmm, interesting. Although I've not been impressed with Ubuntu releases past Hardy, the improvements to Unity seem to be receiving some good feedback form the Beta and RC stages so I might give it a go just to see how different it is.

It's a shame MeeGo doesn't join with Ubuntu as I think its GUI would be perfect replacement for Unity. I'll give the latest version a go though didn't like the last one and I'm surprised they removed the classic logon option from the default install.

Is it worth getting this or keeping 10.10 for a netbook?

I only briefly tried 11.04 and it didn't seem as good, there were some annoying bugs and it felt like it lost some features.

I don't use Ubuntu any more, i guess you could class me as one of the 'Unity Haters'. But that's the good thing about Linux, that you have choice. You can choose what you want. And Canonical must be doing something right, as since 10.10 the number of regular Linux users i know in person has gone from two to well over half a dozen, mostly thanks to Ubuntu.

I've spend the last thirty minutes trying to prepare for upgrade, never mind the actual upgrade! Stuck on 83 out of 98 files. The servers must be getting hammered now.

In the end I went into Synaptic and switched the repos to use the main server rather than the UK one, which fell over at around 17.30. The main server is still coping and I left work with the upgrade stating a 7 hour download time. Hopefully my computer will be ok when I arrive tomorrow!

Ubuntu is fail. Long live debian, Opensuse, mint, arch etc etc

I am missing YaST2 from OpenSuSE, seems odd the this user friendly distro doesn't have something like YaST2 for easy set-up of system. Plus, is unity the only environment in future releases?

Now that Lubuntu is an an official distro its packages have been added to the official repositories. I tried it out earlier but prefer Xubuntu. The nice guy over at psychocats has updated his how to pages to cover Lubuntu which is handy :)

I've been running the alpha the last month or so in a VM and updating every couple of days, it's interesting to see how the final release has shaped up. I use Ubuntu on this machine, currently on 10.04 and I'm really liking the new unity interface.

It seems to got a lot better since 11.04, I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Roll on the next LTS :)

This is the sort of statement that really 'fails'.

I'm making a move into the Linux world and coming up against this crap over and over again. Surely Ubuntu is one of the most popular distros out there?
It's pretty off-putting.
