Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Released Today!!

I tried it out earlier but prefer Xubuntu.

The Xfce desktop is looking more and more appealing at the moment. The devs there must be jumping for joy that the Gnome team (and MS for that matter) are abandoning the classic desktop design.

I have been using Unity on 11.04, giving it a shot. Just upgrade to 11.10 to see what has improved.

This is the sort of statement that really 'fails'.

I'm making a move into the Linux world and coming up against this crap over and over again. Surely Ubuntu is one of the most popular distros out there?
It's pretty off-putting.

why?

Unity is rubbish in my opinion. Ubuntu is going it's own road which I don't want to go down. It's breaking away...

Good luck to them but It's not what I want.

Why are you making the move to linux and only considering Ubuntu?

You should try opensuse, debian, mint, arch, pclinuxos, mandriva, fedora, centOS, Sabayon etc etc...

You decide what suits you best, thats the power of linux.

For me Ubuntu is a train wreck. I also wouldn't tell someone to go ubuntu I merely list all the top10 userfriendly distros. It's up the the individual to trial them.

Hell how do you even know which Desktop Environment you will find most productive?

You got openbox, XFCE, LXDE, KDE 3, KDE4, Gnome2, Gnome 3 among many others...

The Unity launcher is horrible. Really not a fan.

When using Ubuntu in the past I've always used the GNOME launcher, and always liked the look of it. I'm back on classic GNOME now, on a new installation. Finally using Ubuntu on my PC for some things. GNOME classic is just so much nicer.

I think he was taking offence at the blanket way in which you seemed to brand Ubuntu as fail. It comes across to me, that the Open Source community can be very elitist in some ways. And when one OS becomes too popular, people will jump ship and brand said OS as a failure. I'm not saying that everyone does this, but I have seen what people I know who use Linux exclusively say about Windows being rubbish etc. Most of it is totally uncalled for, and simply comes across as pure elitism. I'm not saying this applies to you at all. Just it does to some people.

well I use Windows 7 more and OS X. I like to game so need windows.

As for Ubuntu there main focus is unity so I jumped ship to Arch and opensuse years ago. I think unity is total cack so it seemed silly for me to keep using ubuntu.

I'm currently on KDE4 on opensuse as Gnome3 and unity are cack. XFCE seems ok, but know where near as good as Gnome2.

Is Gnome 2 being developed anymore? I have switched to KDE so I keep getting updates and it's good but very similar to Windows 7, which then begs the question, why not use windows 100% of time?

Online banking and general browsing keeps me on linux for security.

I've not used Linux and Ubuntu in quite some time but thought I'd see what the fuss was tonight and have a look around. Got to love VirtualBox for making that easy...

All I've got to say is "what the hell!?". This will take some getting used to. Not sure I like it. So I'm trying a few otjer distros to see how I feel over time.

I have never tried linux. So i installed this on my wifes netbook which needed an os reinstall anyway. To be honest its great! Wife can work it no probs, has everything she wants (browser, office suite, picasa, vlc....)

Super easy to configure.... linux got accessible!

Really not in a good mood today - set the OO upgrade to start last night, came down to a crashed machine. Tried to boot into recovery mode only to find my drives trashed. :(

I have no idea what failed during the upgrade but I've lost a shed load of data and apps and just can't afford this kind of failure - so I'm going back to Win7.

Shame cause I like Linux too.

:(

Boot from a CD and see if you can see any of the data? What file types did you lose? If you lost data from a different partition, then it might be possible to use Recuva in the Windows environment to pull it back. All depends on what you mean by 'trashed' I suppose.

I don't like unity, it feels sluggish and limiting, nothing is where you want it or behaves the way you want, classic style desktops are that way for a reason, they need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel.

What's the quickest and nicest desktop out of this lot?

GNOME: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
KDE: sudo apt-get install? kubuntu-desktop
XFCE: sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
LXDE: sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
UNITY: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook

I tried Lubuntu and it's a lot quicker, not sure whether i like it as much though, ubuntu still looks and feels a bit nicer to use than the rest, might be because im more used to it though.

If you like lovely compositing and osx then you'll love pinguy os.

Ooopps forgot you hate ubuntu ... better not install it then :D

PS I don't understand how you can slate ubuntu but like debian ? They're the same but ubuntu has a bigger community.

If you don't like the default windows managers they're easy to change

may have to grab this for my netbook, once again. however i have never really been keen on the new UI, i use to like the standalone netbook remix editions

I've not tried Ubuntu for years and have recently got a netbook and dual booted this with Windows 7. As someone coming to this fresh: -

Positives

* Everything worked out of the box
* Love the options on the status bar stuff at the top (mail icons, power, wireless, sound etc)
* Seems very easy to use, although I actually think *too* much has been hidden
* Like the 'Dash Home' button
* Reasonably intuitive
* Ubuntu Software Centre

Negatives

* It's sluggish for me, and sometimes freezes for long periods. I know it's only a netbook, but it's a new netbook with a dual processor and sometimes takes an age to respond to things.
* Don't like the launch bar thing

Overall I've been impressed, but I'd like to compare to other desktops rather than base everything on Unity. Assuming you can install any number and switch between them from login?

While there was a time you could say this, the only thing they really have in common now is their package manager. I'm in the 'still love debian, don't like ubuntu' camp.

Yeah it shouldn't be a major problem for you to switch over, once you've found the DE that clicks for you I'd advise moving onto a slightly more in depth distribution like arch, it's very rewarding (and you can set your performance bar pretty much where you want it to be).
