Ubuntu 11

I tried the newest Ubuntu and now I see what you mean. The unity interface is just pointless and annoying. I managed to get back to some normality, but in the process found myself thinking 'Windows 7 is actually pretty darn good'. Had some problems with shutdown and mint, I'm sure distros used to be better out of the box, or am I going crazy? Maybe I'm picking the wrong ones, but I'm not a linux power user.

Ubuntu in 'appealing to the lowest common denominator' shocker.
Protip: If you don't like Unity, pick a better distro. Once upon a time that was supposed to be the beauty of GNU/Linux.

I have its called Sabayon and I have stuck with it since v3 and its flawless.

As I said, I used to love KDE until v4 and then I moved to gnome and although unity is indeed only the interface that can be switched back very easily, they pushed it onto us.

If gnome goes the way of KDE for me, then Im no longer going to support it.

Hell, I even reinstalled Mandrake 6 for a laugh the other day and I loved it... It browsed the internet just fine... Yes its a bit cutting off my nose to spite my face, but this is seriously how I feel.

I have gone through Mandrake, Connectiva, Storm, SuSE, RedHat then Fedora.. .Yes ist a choice but when they all follow suit sooner or later, this choice is quite often an illusion.

The thign for me is that Windows I have to say it, is just getting better and better while linux distros are going the other way round.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Linux is going backwards, but the Gnome-centric distros certainly don't appeal to me any more. Thankfully, the reverse is true for KDE-centric distros. KDE 4.x has come a long way since the point-oh and I absolutely love it now. Best desktop environment I have ever used.

I do agree that Windows 7 is the best version of Windows yet, but I still don't feel comfortable using it. Games only for me. Linux for proper stuff. :p

Horses for courses :p
i cant get enough of Gnome 3/FC15, however I'm still! yet to try KDE4 and Unity out.

I do believe someone has started a fork of Ubuntu with Gnome for you die hard fans :)
Thats the beauty of Linux is the sheer choice and if you don't like something then you can just do things your way :)

No, in case there is any confusion, I never said it was going backwards.

I said Windows is getting better and linux is not... Its still going forward, but its getting worse, but not backwards.

KDE4 for me was just painful to use. Admittedly yes, it has undergone a few adjustments since its release, but its still got some sillyness that I simply dont like... I mostly find the icons extra features a bit too much... The ability to rotate windows is a bit iffy for me and sure you dont have to, but its all ( Seemingly ) part of the same thing. I just dont like it at all.

I will however chuck the Latest KDE up to have a fiddle about - Im not totally single minded.

LOL

Yup, there it goes. I just installed Debian 6 and I opted for the KDE option, and bingo, there is the entire reason on why I hate ... no, absolutely LOATHE KDE now.

Stupid Desktop activity widget crud, the issues I have are already too numerous to list and I have only played with it for 15 minutes and already I have had to restart it twice to get rid of the context menu. Nope, I hate it and I will never go back to it.

As for Ubuntu 11.4 / Gnome - I set it back to Gnome classic and now the menu bar goes missing ( an issue I have had a lot recently ) Again, never had such a problem with Sabayon, and thats got a full compiz desktop with all the eyeball sluttery I can muster with Emerald themes and its flawless.

No wonder I use my Atari more than my PCs
