Well, trying to dual boot Ubuntu with XP, having installed XP a while ago.

The installer gets to 94% then pops up the error message:

"Executing 'grub-install (hd0)' failed. This is a fatal error"

And when i click ok it all closes, this has happened twice now, does anyone know what could be wrong? I have partitioned the one hard drive in windows using partition magic 8 and that is what im installing to.

Thanks in advance

boot sector protection in BIOS?

So your c:\ partition is NTFS? I'm wondering if Ubuntu isn't going to be happy trying to install GRUB where it can't write?

Grubs installing itself into the MBR, not touching the Windows partitions.

When it asks you to install a boot loader select No. Then grab the CD, boot into the Live thingy and install it manually. Or you could use Lilo!
