15 days to go, anybody looking forward to it? I really am, I haven't used Ubuntu since 6.06, has anybody been following Ubuntu specifically, how it's been doing since that year and a bit?

Have been using 7.04 for a while, and I'm converted to Kubuntu now... it took me a while to get used to it, but I find that I don't have to struggle with things any more. Was previously using Sabayon, which was great fun but just too much hassle when things didn't work. It was satisfying fixing things, but it was getting to the stage where I was getting frustrated that stuff wouldn't work out-of-the-box.

Ubuntu seems to me to be the first distro intended for home users that provides a level of support normally reserved for enterprise-level distros.

I've downloaded the 7.10 beta but haven't got round to trying it yet.

I am also eager for the new release. Mostly because it ships with Compiz-Fusion in the box. Anyone who has installed it manually and fought it to get it working will know great relief :p

Does anyone know if 7.10 makes it any easier for an ATI graphics card owner to use Ubuntu? I have an ATI X1800XT and find it tiresome to search for ATI drivers, making the card work, and especially being able to use Compiz-Fusion or the old version of it (forget the name).

I have it (beta) installed under VMWare, looks pretty cool. I'm a Fedora man and the desktop stuff was released in-box with the latest release of that so I can vouch for the ease of install/configuration of the Compiz stuff :)

Since Ubuntu Feisty [7.04] it has supported drivers for ATI and NVIDIA. Should be under System > Admin > Restricted Drivers.

Feisty should also support your wireless card out the box, including WPA, although of course there could be exceptions.

I've been running 7.10 for a couple of days, and it is great. Much easier to get Compiz working on my ATI 9800 Pro. Before, it would run really slow and clunky, but it's very slick and speedy on 7.10.

They have no doubt optimised Compiz for use with Ubuntu. When mine was working it worked great, but I did get the odd slow down. An update recently killed it, and I couldn't be mithered installing it all again!

Had exactly the same problem, looking forward to seeing how it works out.

Haven't touched my ubuntu installation for a while because of the lack of Compiz Fusion (silly I know, but I was enjoying using it a lot).

Took a few days but I got used to not using it. The only things I really miss are

Expo - I am always forgetting where I put things

Rotating window switcher - because it is cool, elegant and easier to spot the precise window you want

Grouping Windows - great when you have lots of stuff open and you can chuck the groups about as you change desktops [which leads back to Expo when I lose aforementioned groups!]

I also liked the window animations. Made my desktop feel like a futuristic computer, rather than boring Gnome :p

It's a shame Mice are still hard to configure in Ubuntu. Without editing files, it seems impossible to get forward/backward buttons working in Firefox etc. would have thought that most users would have more than a 2 button mouse now!

It's pretty much standard though. the QWERTY keyboard isn't very efficient but look at how widely that is used.

Mouse gestures :D

Mouse gestures for me are usually quicker than pressing a button on the side of my mouse.

It would be nice to be able to configure it easily - as there's only so many simple mouse gestures I can use [read: bother to remember].
