has anyone installed beryl on this? im really new to this but the main reason i bothered with this is all the graphics that come with beryl.

iv tried and tried following many install guides and really cant get it to work. does anyone know of a newbie guide that a idiot could follow to install it?

Compiz Fusion (the new name since Beryl merged with Compiz) comes installed by default with Ubuntu 7.10.

As Gumbald asks, what hardware are you using? If you're using an ATI or Nvidia card, have you enabled the restricted drivers?

If you do have your drivers installed, you should add the Compiz configuration panel to control the effects.
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

ok well i got it working. was simple really no need with all that beryl code. i got a nvadia card and it seems to run the effects fine. is there any site that i can get addons for this? thanks.

It'll all be there already, it's just a case of configuring it. CCSM (Compiz Config Settings Manager that Billy spoke about) is great, but takes a bit of getting used to. Once you've played around with it, though, it'll make sense.

well i would like nice icons on my desktop and maybe a nicer looking bar at the bottem. iv seen in pics that when u open up the cube u can see all four windows like this.

You've tried to make Gnome like Windows, arrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh!

Apart from that:

a) Compiz settings are all there to be tweaked with in the CCSM, there's lots of them. Just keep trying different ones until you find the things you're after.

b) Customising Gnome, the possibilities are endless. What "nice looking stuff" are you after?

If you've got any specific things you'd like to add that you see on someone else's screenshot, show it to us and we can try and help. We can't tell you what you like though :)

Not meaning to hijack your thead but i'm having mega issues getting ATI drivers installed on Guttsy Gibbon with x800xt pe.

My X850 XT PE was a hassle as well. The restricted manager didn't work and it left me with the Mesa drivers in use. I downloaded the latest stable driver from ATI's web site and used the manual install option in Envy to automate it. It worked. :)

thanks everyone for the help it seems to be set up nice now. one thing though i would like is as the pics above, when i open up the cube its zoomed in a fair way. iv searched and searched and cant find anyway to change this.

Envy was my next line of enquiry :p

Tired with envy first time around....i followed a manual install guide but managed to save all of my config files to my desktop :rolleyes:suffice to say i rebooted and found i had been unlucky....doh!!

Given up for this evening:(

That's what the open cube does, sorry misread your question. Change to having two workspaces and they'll get bigger. But it lines them up horizonatally.
