If you want a really nice bar at the bottom you need AWN, Its not in the Ubuntu repositories for 7.10, so you have to add the correct repo. I will explain how do do this below without using the command line.
First locate the Synaptic Package Manager its in: system|Administration.
At the top of the screen go into settings|Repositories. Then click the 3rd party tab.
Now Click new and paste this line in:
deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42 gutsy avant-window-navigator
Click new again and paste This line in:
deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42 gutsy avant-window-navigator
Ensure the boxes are checked next to them.
Keeping the screen open, open you browser and paste this line into the address bar:
http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/reacocard.asc
This will prompt you to save a file, put it somewhere easy to find.
Now go back into the repositories screen and click the Authentications tab. Now click import key file, then browse to the file you just saved and select it.
Thats the repo installed.
Now exit out of the repo manager so you see the main screen synaptic.
Click search and type in: Avant
A list of packages will be shown, you need to mark "avant-windows-navigator" and "awn-core-applets" then click apply.
Thats it installed and no sudo or apt gets in site.
Now you will find a launcher for it somewhere in the menu, It loads on the bottom and can not be moved. You need to add the applets to it from preference screen you can find by right clicking on it. You can also drag and drop launchers to it from the desktop.
Some of the applets don't work properly most are fine though. Personally I turn of expansion on the gnome panel and delete everything from it but the network monitor and audio control. So its just a little tiny bar in the right hand corner, I have added AWN to the session so it starts by itself when I load.
Just for info I have been testing the Alpha of 8.04 and AWN is in the repo but none of the applets are present (I have a work around but I won't go into it unless someone asks).
