Ubuntu 8.04 Released

Do you have any bootable CDs around? if so, test that one of them works. YOu can then eliminate your hardware ir BIOS as a source of the problem. If all is good there you should checksum the .iso file to be sure it isn't corrupted. If it is download it again and burn it again, telling your burner to verify the disk after burning.

Try testing the disk on a different computer as well. If it boots, run the disk check option at the boot screen.

Yep, I've tried booting my Vista disk and have the same issue. I've put a thread in the general hardware section, if you have any ideas let me know-that would be great. Cheers :)

I've known some cd/dvd drives to have issues with booting.

Do you have a spare cd/dvd drive you can jury rig to install from ?

All up and running so yay! But I can't get the graphical effects working (am running an HD3850). When I click on "normal" or "extra" effects it tells me that they could not be enabled. Any ideas? Cheers.

I got the CD problem sorted-the mobo's CMOS battery had come loose!

Additionally, in the "add/remove programs" section, when I click on anything it asks me if I want to enable Ubuntu programs. If I click enable, it just sits there with the spinning "busy" wheel and doesnt seem to do a lot. Any ideas why, or do I just need to wait?

Have you installed the ATi proprietary graphics driver? Use System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers

In Software Sources enable all of the repositories if they aren't already enabled.

Updates for me were incredibly slow yesterday and today, probably owing to the server load from all of us updating and installing simultaneously. Try installing with Synaptic instead and see if that's just as slow.

Only issue I've come across is that when I accessed certain web pages the system would hang with a blank screen and I'd have to manually reboot. I think this was caused by Adobe Flash player as I'm using the 64-bit version on a C2D 6550-based system. I'll update if it still happens without Flash. :)

Servers will be slow due to everyone getting the new release so give it a week or two for normal operation.

How do you install the proprietary drivers? In that section it just says "ATI drivers" and has a red light next to it. There aren't any buttons and nothing happens when I right click.

EDIT: I tell a lie, it actually has a tick in the "enabled" box, but next to it is a red light saying "not in use".

Also, in the package manager it says that Amarok cannot be installed on my computer type (i386).

Are all of the repositories enabled, like I mentioned above?

I have no idea why AmaroK wouldn't show up since it's unrestricted. Just toe be sure you've got all the repos reloaded be sure to run sudo apt-get update before using apt to install anything.

It's quite odd that the ATi driver would be enabled but not in use right off the bat. For kicks try unticking that check box, reboot, then tick it again and reboot to see if anything changes.

Already tried that Billy, still got nothing...

Edit: This is what I get when I try to update the repositories:

manic111@manic111-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

EnvyNG

Google it and install it.

ANd for the lock issue try:

ps -A

Look for 'apt' or aptitude in the entries list. Make a note of the process ID, then I think you can type "Kill xxxx" where xxxx is your process iD for the apt bit. Otherwise, reboot !! :)

I had the same issue with a Mobility Radeon 2600HD on my lappie.

Had a look at Envy-is it effectively Wine for drivers?

I have finally managed to connect to a software server so can now download stuff-Ive gone into Hardware Drivers and disabled then enabled the restricted driver-it's now downloading something so hopefully it will sort itself out. I will give Envy a go if not. Cheers.

Fantastic-all seems to be up and running nicely with Compiz, Amarok, package managers etc fine. However, the wireless connection is awful. Much weaker and therefore slower than it is via Vista. Any ideas or ways around this? Are there any better wireless managers that could help?

Envy is not like Wine. Wine sets up a compatibility layer that translates Win32 system calls into ones Linux understands. Envy is simply an automatic driver installer for nvidia and ati cards.

Question.

I was using the 8.04 beta... I have done all the latest updates. Does this mean this is now the final 8.04 or do I need to download and install?

Just downloaded the 64 bit version, tried the live CD and very pleased they have fixed the black screen boot bug, only taken 3 releases.

Just need to find a spare HDD to install now

Pretty much everything is working for me now-thanks a lot :)

One question: I have downloaded Opera (always preferred it to Firefox). How do I get it to play Youtube videos? All I get at the moment is a grey box.

I don't know how Opera works but in Firefox it will list the Flash update and install it. However I have found this:

http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/04/25/10-tips-for-after-you-install-or-upgrade-ubuntu/
"# Install restricted extras (and enable the multiverse repository)

Install support for playback of many types of audio and video, web fonts, Java, Flash, and DVD playback all in one go. Ubuntu restricted extras allow you to easy install everything that Ubuntu can’t include by default for legal reasons.

Open Applications->Add/Remove. In the Show drop down box, select All available applications. This will enable the multiverse software repository, and give you access to the restricted extras and non-free software. Start typing restricted extras into the search box and check the box beside Ubuntu restricted extras when it appears in the results. Click Appy Changes to begin installing."
