Ubuntu: An Excellent Beginners Distro

Oooo very nice, clean and compact XF86Config file :p All looks to be in good order to me. Your next job is to install the nvidia drivers from here. Make sure you read the howto here. This will enable hardware acceleration and hopefully improve your colours :)

Add
Code:
ModeLine "1280x1024" 198.56 1280 1336 1616 1728 1024 1026 1038 1064 #108Hz
to your Monitor Section in your XF86Config file. Example:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"AOC Spectrum"
	HorizSync	48-121
	VertRefresh	30-160
	Option "DPMS"
        ModeLine "1280x1024" 198.56 1280 1336 1616 1728 1024 1026 1038 1064 #108Hz
EndSection

some interesting stuff.

Hey Mpemba Effect , would you be interested in installing and reviewing Yoper linux. Its installation is text based and takes about 12mins, runs very fast, uses apt-get, and uses the Suse config tool SAX2.

plus it would mean you help me out more when i get stuck (which is like every other day) lol.
Yup sure thing :)

I don't think msttcorefonts is even in the ubuntu apt-get database. I've done some searches in synaptic and can't find the microsoft fonts. I've managed to install it by first using apt-get to install "cabextract" (a dependency of msttcorefonts) then I downloaded the debian package from - http://packages.debian.org/unstable/graphics/msttcorefonts.html - cd to the directory where you just downloaded the file and use dpkg to install it
Code:
dpkg -i msttcorefonts_1.1.11_all.deb
reboot or restart X and the fonts should be useable :)

All video cards will work in linux using the generic vesa driver. However you don't get any hardware acceleration. When you dabbled with linux previously the x800 proberbly wasn't even supported in the ATI propriatory drivers. Fortunately ATI seems to be getting there act together and releasing drivers more frequently. The latest ATI driver do support the x800 ;)

Hi, I just ordered some CD's from the Ubuntu website, and I was wondering if anybody else has done this??

If so how long does it take to be delivered??

Thanks

ChrisG

The current release of Ubuntu is not yet final, it is still release a candidate (Ubuntu 4.10 "The Warty Warthog" Release Candidate). Cd's won't be shipped until 4.10 final is released as mentioned on their site - http://www.ubuntulinux.org/download/
We will be sending these CDs after we finalize the 4.10 release: probably before the end of October

What you can do is you apt-get or synaptic to to "fetch" the files (rather than fetch and install), you should be able to fetch the files at your own leisure so a bit one day and bit another. Once you have all the file use apt-get or synaptic to install them. I wouldn't download the packages one by one manually there a lot. I'm not quite sure how much (I'm not booted in Ubuntu atm) but in to install KDE on my current gentoo box i'll need

It might not be this much since you may have a lot of these already installed but it gives you an idea ;)

You might be able to use the file from magazine dvds however these are either specific to another distro (or i may be that it's not specific to any distro). I don't know what files are on these disks and I don't know exactly how to you'll be able to use them.

Thats a good one! Theres no Ubuntu floppies that I know of  Check the faq on the Ubuntu site, I'm pretty sure theres nothing about floppies. You're best bet is to drop the folks at Ubuntu a mail.

edit: Apparently you can netboot .. not sure if thats useful to you or not - http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/documentation/howto/installation-i386
