I am trying out different Linux distro's and so far favor the Xubuntu environment over Ubuntu, Mint and a couple others I have dabbled with.

However one of the main reasons I am not running Linux more often (apart from the fact I am still very new and it scares me a little) are software fan controllers. I have gotten used to Asus's Six Engine which renders my PC silent 95% of the time under windows. My PC is horrendously noise without this despite all of the fans being super silent fans as they all default to max speed.

I have had a look around and can't find anything remotely like what I need i.e. something to lower the speed of my fans. I was hoping someone here could point me to something that would work under the *ubuntu family... pretty please.

My rig is:
Code:
  System Model: Asus P5Q-E
     Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
        Memory: 4GB RAM
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4850 Series

The most popular way to do it is with a program called lm-sensors. I've never used it so I can't make any recommendations on how to install or use it. From what I gather it can be a bear to set up but once it works it's reliable.

Since they don't need to be on full speed ever anyway, have you considered 7v-modding them?
